Chapter 7 - The Counter-Attack

For forty-eight hours, the Harrisons tried to bluff. They sent threatening letters, tried to pressure my landlord, and even had Sarah post a smear campaign online, calling me an ungrateful, gold-digging liar.
But I was no longer the fragile woman who allowed herself to be silenced.
With Maya’s help, we leaked a carefully edited, highly impactful 15-second clip of the smart-home footage to a prominent local journalist. The video showed Eleanor forcefully grabbing Lily, the sharp sound of the slap, Lily’s heartbroken crying, and Sarah spitting at me while Mark stood there with his chilling, calculated gaze.
The reaction was instantaneous and explosive.
The video went viral. Within hours, public outrage swept through the city. Eleanor’s charity board demanded her immediate resignation. The high-end boutique Sarah owned was flooded with thousands of one-star reviews and protests outside her doors, forcing her to shut down indefinitely.
Mark’s corporate employers, terrified of the public relations nightmare, placed him on indefinite, unpaid administrative leave pending an internal investigation into his conduct.
My phone rang. It was Mark. His voice was no longer cold and calculated; it was desperate and broken.
“Clara, please,” he begged, sobbing openly. “They’re ruining us. My mother is having chest pains. Sarah’s business is gone. I’m going to lose my job. Please, take down the video. We’ll give you whatever you want. Just stop this!”
I listened to him, feeling a profound sense of peace.
“You stood there, Mark,” I said softly. “You watched your mother strike your own daughter. You watched your sister humiliate your wife. You didn't care about our pain. You only care now because it's happening to you.”

“I’m sorry, Clara! I swear I’m sorry!”
“Goodbye, Mark. Talk to my lawyer.” I hung up and blocked his number for good.
