Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

The mediation room was cold and sterile. I sat on one side of the long mahogany table with Diane and Maya. On the other side sat Mark, Eleanor, Sarah, and their team of three high-priced corporate attorneys.
Eleanor looked at me with pure disdain, while Sarah smirked, playing with her manicured nails. Mark looked smug, clearly believing his legal team would intimidate me into submission.
Their lead attorney, a stern man named Richard, spoke first. “Mrs. Vance, my clients are prepared to offer a generous settlement. Mr. Harrison will grant joint custody, a modest alimony package, and will overlook your client’s recent... unstable behavior, on one condition.”
“And what is that condition?” Diane asked, her voice dripping with professional boredom.
“Your client must sign over the management rights of the trust fund linked to the child, Lily, to the Harrison Family Estate Trust,” Richard said smoothly. “After all, a woman of her background is hardly qualified to manage such vast financial assets.”
Eleanor chimed in, her voice dripping with venom. “We only want what’s best for our granddaughter. You’re a schoolteacher, Clara. You’d probably blow it all on cheap vacations. We will manage it properly.”
Diane smiled—a slow, predatory smile that made Mark’s lawyers shift uncomfortably.
“That’s an interesting proposal,” Diane said. “But we have a counter-offer.”
She slid a thick folder across the table.
“Inside, you will find a certified copy of the Swiss Trust, which explicitly states that any attempt by the father’s family to seize or manage these funds automatically triggers a full, independent forensic audit of the Harrison Family Estate's tax history,” Diane stated.
Mark’s face drained of color.
Diane continued, “We also have the medical reports detailing the physical abuse of Lily by Eleanor Harrison, the eyewitness statement of the assault, and the smart-home camera footage of Sarah Harrison spitting on my client while Mark Harrison stood by and condoned the abuse of his child.”

Sarah’s smirk vanished. Eleanor sat up straight, her jaw dropping.
“If you do not agree to our terms of absolute sole custody, a lifetime restraining order, and a substantial financial settlement for emotional distress,” Diane whispered, leaning forward, “this footage and these documents will be on every major news outlet and social media platform by noon. Let’s see what that does to your family’s prestigious reputation.”
