Chapter 5 - Unearthing the Past

When Mark was served the divorce and custody papers at his corporate office, he lost his mind. He showed up at Maya’s apartment complex, pounding on the security doors, shouting my name.
“Clara! Open this door! You think you’re clever? You’re nothing without me! You’ll starve in the streets before you see a dime of my money!”
I stood on the balcony, looking down at him. For years, I had shrunk myself to fit into his world. I had tolerated Eleanor’s passive-aggressive insults and Sarah’s cruel barbs. I had done it all for the sake of keeping my family together. But seeing him rage below like a petulant child, I felt nothing but disgust.
“Go away, Mark,” I called down, my voice steady. “The police are already on their way. If you don't leave, you'll spend Lily's birthday weekend in a jail cell.”
He looked up, his face twisted in rage. “You think that stupid dress is going to save you? My mother’s lawyers will tear you to pieces!”
As the distant sound of police sirens began to wail, Mark cursed, kicked his car tire, and sped off.
That night, I sat down with Lily. I held her hand and looked into her beautiful, innocent eyes. “Lily, sweetie, do you remember when Nana gave you this dress?”
Lily nodded, a small tear slipping down her cheek. “She told me it was a magic dress. She said when I turned six, the magic would protect us from bad people.”

My heart swelled. My Nana had known. She had seen how controlling Mark’s family was, and she had hidden this safety net where only a mother’s love and desperation would find it.
“The magic worked, baby,” I whispered, hugging her close. “We are going to be okay. I promise you.”
