Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Trap

By ten o'clock that morning, panic had completely taken over Evan. Refusing to believe what had transpired at the front door, he dressed in his finest designer suit, pulled up to the glass tower of Mitchell Technologies in a taxi after his luxury vehicle refused to start, and stormed into the corporate headquarters.
He believed he was going to demand an immediate meeting with the mysterious CEO—a legendary founder known in tech circles simply as C.M., who rarely made public appearances and ran the empire through an elite executive board. Evan was convinced there had been a massive administrative error, a glitch in the HR system, or a rogue action by legal counsel.
He shoved his way past security at the lobby, using his lingering authority to take the executive elevator straight to the top floor.
"I demand to see the Chief Executive Officer!" Evan shouted as he burst through the double frosted-glass doors of the main boardroom. "There has been an illegal breach of my contract and an unlawful seizure of my personal residence!"
The room was silent. Sitting around the massive mahogany table were the company’s top executives, chief financial officers, and general counsel. Every eye turned toward the door.
And sitting at the head of the table, in the high-backed leather chair reserved exclusively for the owner and founder of Mitchell Technologies, was a woman dressed in a tailored charcoal-grey suit, her hair pulled back into a flawless, elegant knot.
Evan froze. His jaw dropped. The papers he was clutching fluttered from his hands onto the polished carpet.
"Claire...?" he choked out, his voice barely a whisper. "What... what are you doing in the chairman's chair? Get down before security—"
"Sit down, Evan," I said softly, my voice carrying an effortless authority he had never heard in eleven years of marriage.

"I believe you know everyone here," I continued, gesturing gracefully toward the board. "Though what you didn't know is that 'C.M.' stands for Claire Mitchell. I founded this firm three years before I ever met you. Every raise you received, every bonus you bragged about at dinner, every dollar that funded your lavish lifestyle and your mother's luxury trips was approved by my pen."
Evan staggered backward, clutching the back of a chair for balance. The blood drained so completely from his face that he looked like a ghost.
