Chapter 2 - The Morning After

The sun rose over the rolling hills of California, casting a warm golden glow through the glass windows of my new penthouse suite downtown. Standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows with a steaming cup of dark coffee in hand, I watched the city wake up. Beside me, Sophie and Noah were sleeping peacefully in their new bedrooms, safe, comfortable, and far away from the toxic shadow of the Brooks family.
Down at the suburban mansion—the home where I had spent eleven years tending to every flower, polishing every hardwood floor, and quietly enduring subtle cruelties—the wake-up call was about to be far less peaceful.
At precisely seven-thirty in the morning, two sleek black vehicles pulled up to the driveway. Out stepped four uniformed representatives from a premier security firm alongside my lead legal counsel, Arthur Vance.
Inside the house, Diane Brooks was likely hovering around the marble kitchen island, sipping expensive tea while Marissa stroked her baby bump and Evan reviewed his corporate emails, fully believing he was the master of his domain. They had changed the locks the night before, completely oblivious to the fact that the smart lock system, the land title, and the master security network were registered under Mitchell Global Holdings.
Arthur didn't hesitate. With a master digital override code provided directly from my executive portal, the front doors unlocked with a crisp, electronic click.
When Evan rushed to the foyer in his bathrobe, demanding to know who dared step into his house, Arthur simply raised a thick leather folder.
"Mr. Evan Brooks," Arthur said, his voice quiet, cold, and razor-sharp. "I am here on behalf of the true single owner of this property, Mitchell Global Holdings. You, your mother, and your guest are currently trespassing on commercial corporate asset property. Your personal belongings have been packed into designated crates by certified movers stationed outside. You have exactly thirty minutes to vacate the premises."
Evan laughed, a shrill, arrogant sound. "Are you insane? I'm the Senior Vice President of Operations at Mitchell Tech! I pay the mortgage on this home!"
May you like
Arthur permitted himself a thin, chilling smile. "You don't pay the mortgage, Mr. Brooks. Mitchell Tech has held the deed since day one. And as of 6:00 AM today, your corporate credentials have been revoked, your company car’s lease has been terminated, and your corporate credit cards have been frozen. Furthermore, your employment with Mitchell Technologies is officially suspended pending a full forensic audit."
From the staircase, Diane gasped, clutching her pearls, while Marissa’s face drained of all color. The illusion they had spent months building was beginning to fracture at the seams.
