Chapter 5 - The Unexpected Ally

Two days later, on a crisp Saturday morning, a sleek black town car pulled into our driveway. Expecting Daniel—or perhaps a process server—I peered cautiously through the living room blinds. Instead, out stepped an older man in a tailored gray suit whom I recognized instantly from family photographs.

It was Richard Whitaker, Margaret’s estranged ex-husband and Daniel’s father.

Richard and Margaret had divorced years ago and lived in entirely different states, maintaining a polite but distant relationship. I hadn't seen him in over two years. When he knocked on the door, Margaret opened it, her expression a mix of surprise and mild irritation.

"Richard? What are you doing here?" Margaret crossed her arms. "Did Daniel call you to come rescue him?"

Richard held up his hands defensively, offering a tired, apologetic smile. "Good morning to you too, Margaret. And no, Daniel didn't call me. Your lawyer called me. And let me tell you, when Eleanor Vance tells a father that his son is behaving like a disgrace to the family name, a father listens."

Margaret stepped aside, letting him in. Richard walked into the living room, taking in the framed family photos on the mantelpiece—photos where Daniel looked happy, before vanity and greed took over.

He walked over to Ethan and Lily, kneeling down to their eye level. "I am so sorry about your father, kids," Richard said softly, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "He clearly inherited the stubborn streak from our side of the family, but he missed out entirely on the part about honor."

Richard stood up and looked directly at me. "Claire, I’m ashamed of what my son put you and these babies through. Margaret called me because she knew we needed a united front. Whatever financial support Daniel cut off, I am stepping in to cover double. And as for his position at Apex Solutions..." Richard smirked slightly. "Well, let's just say I still hold a seat on the board of directors."
