Chapter 4 - Returning to the Hearth

When Margaret walked back out to the SUV, she didn't say a word about what had happened inside. She simply slid into the driver's seat, started the engine, and looked back at me and the kids in the rearview mirror. Her expression was softer now, etched with deep sorrow for the pain we had endured, but hardened with a quiet determination.

"Let's go home, darlings," she said softly. "Your rooms are going to be warm tonight, and nobody is going to worry about bills anymore."

When we arrived back at the house, the atmosphere had completely shifted. Margaret immediately took charge. She called her personal family lawyer—a sharp, formidable woman named Eleanor Vance—and put her on speakerphone right in our living room.

"Claire, darling, put the kettle on," Margaret instructed as she kicked off her boots. "Eleanor is going to walk us through the next steps, and trust me, Daniel’s little girlfriend isn't going to be funding any trips to the Keys."

As Eleanor’s voice filled the room, explaining how Daniel’s corporate assets and personal holdings were now subject to court oversight due to financial abandonment, a massive weight began to lift from my chest. Ethan sat beside me on the couch, listening intently.

"Does this mean we get to keep our house, Mom?" Ethan asked quietly, looking up at me with big, hopeful eyes.

Before I could answer, Margaret knelt down beside him, taking his small hands in hers. "Not only do you get to keep your house, Ethan, but your father is going to learn a very expensive lesson about responsibility. You never have to worry about the lights going out again. Grandma is here."

Ava, still clutching Daniel's old baseball cap, looked at Margaret and toddled over, leaning against her knee. Margaret smiled, scooping the little girl up into her arms and pressing a warm kiss to her forehead.
