Chapter 2 - The Confrontation in the Executive Suite

Margaret marched through the revolving glass doors of the Apex Solutions lobby with the authority of a general entering a captured territory. The receptionist, a young woman with a polite corporate smile, looked up as Margaret bypassed the security turnstiles using a badge she still kept from her own consulting days with the firm years ago.

"Ma'am, excuse me, you need to sign in—" the receptionist called out.

"Save it, Linda," Margaret said without breaking stride. "I know security better than you do, and I'm going straight to Daniel Whitaker’s office."

The elevator ride to the fourth floor felt agonizingly slow. When the doors slid open, Margaret walked down the carpeted hallway with deliberate, echoing steps. She didn't knock on the frosted glass door of Daniel’s corner office; she pushed it open with a sharp click.

Daniel wasn't alone.

Sitting across from his mahogany desk was a woman with immaculate blonde hair, wearing a sharp navy blazer, laughing softly at something Daniel was saying. Spread across the desk were travel brochures for the Florida Keys.

Daniel froze, a smile still lingering on his face, which instantly drained of all color as he saw his mother standing in the doorway.

"Mom?" Daniel stammered, half-rising from his ergonomic chair. "What... what are you doing here? How did you get past security?"

"I asked the same question about your conscience, Daniel, but nobody had an answer," Margaret said, her voice terrifyingly calm as she stepped into the room.

The woman—Vanessa, undoubtedly—scrambled to gather her papers, her face turning crimson. "Mr. Whitaker, I should go..."

"Stay right where you are, Vanessa," Margaret said, her gaze shifting to the younger woman with a look so sharp it could cut glass. "You might want to hear this, seeing as you've been so deeply invested in my son's professional... and personal... development."

Daniel gripped the edge of his desk, his voice rising in panic. "Mom, you have no right to barge in here like this. This is my workplace!"

"And that house in the suburbs is your family's home, Daniel—the one you abandoned three weeks ago while you play house with brochures for tropical resorts and drain your children's college fund!" Margaret stepped closer, her voice finally breaking through its icy veneer with a mother's raw, unfiltered fury. "Is this the 'urgent overtime' you told me about on Sunday? Is this why your wife is sitting at home with three sick children and unpaid bills while you sit here planning a vacation with a woman who has no shame?"

Daniel looked wildly between his mother and Vanessa, utterly trapped.
