Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Dynasty
The courtroom erupted into total chaos as two armed bailiffs stepped forward and grabbed Mark by his arms.
"Elena! Tell them! Tell them it's a mistake!" Mark screamed, losing his composure completely as the cuffs clicked around his wrists. His face flushed red, his handsome facade crumbling into ugly, terrified desperation. "Elena, please! We can work this out! Think of the family!"
"You didn't think of this family when you pushed our daughter down the stairs," I said, standing up and looking down at him with zero pity. "You didn't think of us when you tried to make me look insane. It's over, Mark."
As the guards dragged Mark toward the side holding cell, Detective Miller and two federal agents stepped through the double doors at the back of the courtroom. They walked straight down the aisle toward Patricia Vance.
"Patricia Vance," Detective Miller announced loudly, his voice echoing over the hushed crowd. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit fraud, forgery of medical records, obstruction of justice, and felony accessory to child abuse. You have the right to remain silent."
Patricia stood up tall, trying to maintain her aristocratic dignity, but her hands were trembling violently as the female officer turned her around and snapped handcuffs onto her wrists. Her eyes locked onto mine—no longer cold and commanding, but filled with the hollow shock of total defeat.
"You ruined everything," Patricia spat at me, her voice trembling with hatred. "You were nothing before us! An ungrateful, pathetic little painter!"
"I was an artist before I met your son, Patricia," I replied calmly, holding Emma close to my side. "And now, I am the woman who freed her daughter from your toxic legacy."
Over the next six months, the Vance empire collapsed like a house of cards in a hurricane.
With Sarah Lin’s evidence and the medical server metadata, the state prosecutor launched a massive racketeering case against Vance Enterprises. The investigation revealed years of financial fraud, tax evasion, and corporate extortion. The family business was seized by federal authorities, its assets frozen to pay millions in restitution to past victims—including Sarah Lin.
Mark was tried and convicted of felony domestic violence, child abuse, and obstruction of justice. He was sentenced to twelve years in a state penitentiary without the possibility of early parole.
Patricia Vance, convicted of multiple counts of fraud, forgery, and conspiracy, received an eight-year sentence. Her beloved social standing vanished overnight; her name became a cautionary tale in Oregon legal history.
