Chapter 5 - Unearthing the Past

To defeat an empire built on lies, you cannot just defend yourself; you have to strike at its foundation.

After Patricia left, Rachel and I began digging into every financial record, every clinic acquisition, and every legal filing associated with Patricia and Mark Vance over the last twenty years. If Patricia had used her medical clinics to fabricate fake psychiatric records for me, she had likely used them before.

"Look at this," Rachel said around 2:00 AM, spreading a massive stack of papers across my studio table. "Ten years ago, a senior executive at Vance Enterprises named Sarah Lin filed a corporate whistle-blower lawsuit claiming Mark was embezzling funds into offshore shell companies."

"I remember Sarah," I said, my mind racing back. "She was Mark's top strategist. Then she suddenly vanished from the company. Mark told me she resigned due to a sudden nervous breakdown."

"According to these court dockets, the lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice," Rachel said, pointing to a stamped document. "Why? Because Sarah Lin was admitted to a psychiatric facility owned by—guess who—Patricia Vance’s healthcare group. She was diagnosed with severe paranoid schizophrenia, discredited completely, and settled out of court for a pittance."

My breath caught in my throat. "It's the exact same playbook."

"It's a pattern of practice," Rachel said, her eyes flashing with excitement. "If we can prove that Patricia Vance has a history of using her medical facilities to forge psychiatric records to silence corporate and personal enemies, her credibility is completely destroyed. And those fake medical records they filed against you become evidence of a criminal conspiracy."

"Where is Sarah Lin now?" I asked.

"She disappeared from Oregon years ago. But I have a friend at a private investigation firm in Seattle. Give me two hours."

While Rachel worked the phones, I walked into the small bedroom where Emma was sleeping peacefully for the first time in days. The pain medication had finally taken effect, smoothing out the lines of agony on her young face. I stroked her hair, feeling a wave of fierce, protective love wash over me.

For years, I had accepted Mark’s subtle put-downs. “You’re just an artist, Elena.” “You don’t understand business.” “My mother knows what’s best for our family.” I had allowed myself to be diminished, bit by bit, believing that keeping the peace was the same thing as keeping my family safe.

I had been wrong. Peace built on compliance is just a gilded cage.

Rachel walked into the room, holding up her phone with a triumphant smile. "Found her. Sarah Lin is living under her maiden name in Vancouver, Washington. And Elena... she’s been waiting ten years for someone to help her fight back."

Within an hour, we were in Rachel's car, driving south through the foggy Oregon night toward the Washington border. We were running out of time—the emergency court hearing for Emma’s custody was scheduled for 9:00 AM the following morning. We needed hard, undeniable proof of Patricia’s corruption, and we needed it before the sun came up.
