Chapter 7 - When the Truth Takes the Stand

The courtroom of Judge Margaret Higgins was packed to capacity at 9:00 AM. Word of the scandal involving the prominent Vance family had leaked to the media, and reporters crammed into the back pews.
Mark sat at the defense table, wearing a custom charcoal suit, looking composed and arrogant. Patricia sat directly behind him in the gallery, flanked by two corporate PR advisors. Richard Vance, their lead attorney, stood at the podium with a stack of polished legal filings.
On our side, Rachel sat beside me and Emma. Emma wore a clean blue sweater that carefully covered her shoulder brace, her face set in a quiet, solemn determination.
"Your Honor," Richard Vance began, his voice booming with practiced authority. "We are requesting an immediate emergency order granting sole legal and physical custody of Emma Vance to her father, Mark Vance. As documented in the psychiatric evaluations submitted to this court, Mrs. Elena Vance has suffered from long-term, severe delusional disorders. She has manipulated the young girl into making false accusations and has clearly fabricated an audio recording to ruin my client’s reputation."
Judge Higgins, a stern, grey-haired woman with sharp eyes, looked down from her bench. "Mrs. Torres, how do you respond to these medical records? They appear to show a five-year history of psychological treatment for your client."
Rachel stood up smoothly, picking up a thick binder.
"Your Honor, we do not merely respond to those records; we move for an immediate criminal investigation into the defense for introducing forged evidence into a court of law."
A sudden murmur rippled through the courtroom. Mark’s posture stiffened. Patricia leaned forward, her eyes narrowing.
"Explain yourself, counsel," Judge Higgins ordered sharply.
"We have in our possession certified digital forensic logs from the central servers of Saint Jude Healthcare," Rachel declared, her voice echoing through the courtroom. "These logs prove conclusively that every single 'psychiatric record' filed against Mrs. Vance was created less than twenty-one days ago. They were generated from an IP address registered directly to Vance Enterprises Headquarters—specifically, from the office terminal of Mrs. Patricia Vance."
"Objection! Unsubstantiated nonsense!" Richard Vance shouted, slamming his hand on the podium.
"I have the sworn affidavit and live testimony of Ms. Sarah Lin, former chief financial strategist for Vance Enterprises," Rachel continued calmly, ignoring the outburst. "Ms. Lin is present in this courtroom today to testify to a decade-long pattern of racketeering, medical forgery, and witness intimidation carried out by Patricia and Mark Vance."
Sarah Lin stood up from the front row of the gallery.
Mark turned pale. He looked back at his mother, whose icy composure finally shattered into a expression of pure, unadulterated panic.
"Your Honor," Rachel pushed forward ruthlessly. "We also submit the original, unedited digital audio file recorded by Emma Vance on the night of the assault. We have had the device forensically authenticated by the FBI's digital evidence division, who are waiting outside this courtroom right now."
Judge Higgins hit her gavel hard, silencing the sudden eruption of whispers from the gallery. She looked at Richard Vance, then at Mark, her eyes burning with outrage.
"Mr. Vance," Judge Higgins said, her voice dropping into a chilling register. "Is there any truth to these allegations regarding the origin of these medical documents?"
Richard Vance looked at Mark, then at Patricia, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. He knew that lying to a federal judge when forensic evidence was already in play meant disbarment and prison time for himself.

"Your Honor..." Richard stuttered, stepping back from the podium. "We... we request a brief recess to consult with our clients."
"Denied," Judge Higgins snapped. She looked down at Emma, her expression softening for a brief moment, before turning back to Mark with absolute fury. "Mr. Vance, your bail is revoked immediately pending further investigation into witness tampering, evidence forgery, and felony child abuse. Bailiffs, take Mr. Vance into custody."
