Chapter 6 - The Counter-Offensive

We met Sarah Lin in a quiet, twenty-four-hour diner just across the state line. She was in her late forties now, her dark hair streaked with silver, her eyes carrying the permanent caution of someone who had been hunted.

When I showed her the fabricated medical files bearing my name and the letterhead of Saint Jude Medical Group—one of Patricia’s clinics—Sarah’s hands began to shake.

"She did it to you, too," Sarah whispered, her voice filled with a mixture of horror and vindication. "I thought I was the only one."

"Sarah, we need your help," I pleaded, holding her hands across the vinyl booth. "They took your career and your reputation. Now they’re trying to take my daughter. Mark pushed Emma down the stairs because she threatened to expose his lies, and Patricia is trying to declare me insane to cover it up."

Sarah looked into my eyes, seeing the desperation and fury of a mother fighting for her child. She took a deep breath, pulled a heavy flash drive from her purse, and placed it on the table between us.

"When I left Vance Enterprises, I didn't leave empty-handed," Sarah said. "I couldn't use these files in my own trial because my attorney was bought off by Richard Vance. But I saved everything. On this drive are the internal system logs from Saint Jude Medical Group."

Rachel grabbed the flash drive, her legal mind instantly grasping its significance. "System logs? As in metadata?"

"Yes," Sarah said with a sharp, cold smile. "Every time a medical file is created or altered, the server logs the IP address, the user ID, and the exact timestamp. Patricia didn't have doctors write those fake records for you, Elena. She had her personal administrative assistant, human resources director, and Mark’s corporate team enter them directly from the Vance Enterprises headquarters."

"Which means," Rachel said, her voice rising with triumph, "the metadata will prove those records were created three weeks ago from a corporate office building, not five years ago by a board-certified psychiatrist!"

"It proves fraud, obstruction of justice, and forgery," Sarah added. "It will destroy Patricia Vance, collapse Mark’s corporate standing, and send them both to prison."

My heart hammered against my ribs. We finally had the smoking gun. Not just an audio file that could be fought over by high-priced lawyers, but digital forensic proof that Patricia and Mark Vance were running a criminal enterprise designed to destroy anyone who stood in their way.

"Will you testify, Sarah?" I asked softly. "Will you come back to Portland and stand with me in court?"

May you like

Sarah Lin looked at her reflection in the dark diner window, then back at me. A powerful, decisive expression settled on her face.

"Ten years ago, I ran away because I was alone," Sarah said firmly. "You aren't alone, Elena. Let's go end this."
