Chapter 5 - The Emergency Hearing

Monday morning arrived with a biting coastal chill and a heavy fog that blanketed the city skyline. By 8:45 AM, Evelyn and I walked through the grand mahogany doors of the municipal courthouse. The halls were already buzzing with lawyers, plaintiffs, and defendants rushing toward their respective courtrooms.

As we approached Courtroom 3B, I spotted him.

Daniel looked like a man who had aged ten years over the weekend. His navy suit—the same one he wore when he lied to me on Friday morning—was rumpled, his hair was uncombed, and dark, bruised circles hollowed out his eyes. He had clearly spent the entire weekend drinking black coffee and panicking. When he saw me walking down the corridor flanked by Evelyn Hart, his face twisted into an ugly mask of fury and desperation.

"Claire!" he hissed, stepping forward, though a court bailiff immediately stepped between us, resting a heavy hand on his belt. "What have you done? You absolute lunatic, do you know what you've done to my life?!"

I didn't flinch. I didn't look down. I looked him dead in the eyes with absolute, unshakeable serenity.

"Good morning, Daniel," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet hallway. "You look like you missed a few hours of sleep."

"You ruined everything!" he spat, his voice rising in pitch, drawing the attention of nearby attorneys and clerks. "The board is holding an emergency meeting this morning! The federal investigators are breathing down my neck! Julian was arrested at the airport this morning! You engineered all of this!"

"No, Daniel," I replied calmly, stepping closer so only he could hear. "I simply stopped covering for your incompetence and greed. You built a house of cards and blamed the wind for knocking it down."

"All rise for the Honorable Judge Thomas Harrison!" the bailiff boomed.

Daniel shot me one final look of pure venom before turning and marching stiffly into the courtroom.

Inside, the atmosphere was solemn and authoritative. Judge Harrison, a sharp-eyed man with decades on the bench, sat behind his polished oak desk, flipping through the thick emergency brief Evelyn had submitted over the weekend.

"Counsel," Judge Harrison began, adjusting his reading glasses as he scanned the documents. "We are here for an emergency injunction review and asset freeze motion regarding Vance Construction, docket number 489-B. Mr. Vance, I see you are representing yourself for the moment, though I strongly advise securing counsel given the nature of these federal fraud allegations."

"Your Honor, this is an outrage!" Daniel blurted out, standing abruptly before the judge even granted him permission. "My wife—my soon-to-be ex-wife—has conspired to illegally freeze my corporate accounts, fabricate malicious financial accusations, and sabotage my business operations out of petty spite!"

"Mr. Vance, sit down," Judge Harrison commanded, his voice echoing with authority. "You are in a court of law, not a boardroom. Address the bench properly or you will be held in contempt."

Daniel swallowed hard, lowering himself back into his seat, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the wooden table.

Evelyn stood up smoothly, adjusting her jacket. "Your Honor, petitioner Claire Vance presents certified forensic accounting records demonstrating a systematic diversion of corporate capital totaling over six hundred thousand dollars into unauthorized shell accounts controlled by the family of Mr. Vance's corporate associate, Vanessa Cole. Furthermore, because Vance Construction was founded entirely upon inheritance capital from Mrs. Vance’s late father, the petitioner holds a legally binding fifty-percent equity stake and supervisory rights that were systematically violated."

Evelyn handed a thick binder of verified bank statements, digital audit trails, and corporate ledgers to the court clerk.

"In light of the ongoing federal investigation into Marcus Vale—with which Mr. Vance's financial activities directly intersect—we move for an immediate full receivership appointment over Vance Construction, placing absolute operational control into the hands of an independent court-appointed auditor, alongside expedited divorce proceedings and sole custody arrangements for the minor child."

Judge Harrison opened the binder, flipping through the pristine, irrefutable evidence I had spent the last three months meticulously compiling. Every shell company, every fraudulent invoice, every unauthorized wire transfer was laid out with mathematical perfection.

The courtroom was dead silent. You could hear the hum of the overhead lights and the scratching of the judge's pen against paper.

Finally, Judge Harrison looked up, his gaze locking onto Daniel, who was sweating profusely under his collar.
