Chapter 3 - The Mistress's Awakening

While Daniel spent his Saturday night frantically calling lawyers who wouldn't pick up their phones and pacing the hardwood floors of our former home, Vanessa Cole was lounging in her newly renovated downtown penthouse. She poured herself a glass of vintage Pinot Noir, admiring the way the city lights glittered against her floor-to-ceiling windows. Life was good. Daniel had promised her that within the year, he would finalize a messy divorce from his "useless, clingy wife," give her a generous settlement, and install Vanessa as the official queen of his social circle.
Her phone buzzed on the marble coffee table. Expecting a romantic text or an update from Daniel about their upcoming weekend getaway to Aspen, she picked it up lazily.
It wasn't Daniel. It was an unfamiliar number attached to an urgent multimedia message.
Frowning, Vanessa tapped the screen. The file opened to reveal a high-resolution screenshot of her brother’s shell company bank account—the very account through which Daniel had been funneling embezzled funds. Below it was a scanned document: a formal notice of criminal investigation issued by the state prosecutor's office, naming both Daniel Vance and Julian Cole as primary targets in a multi-million-dollar fraud and bribery conspiracy.
Vanessa’s wine glass slipped from her fingers, shattering against the marble floor, dark red liquid splashing across her designer rug like blood.
Before she could even scream, her phone rang. Caller ID: Daniel Vance.
She swiped to answer, her hands trembling violently. "Daniel! What the hell is going on? My brother just called me—he received a federal subpoena! They're freezing his assets, they're looking at the shell company—"
"Shut up, Vanessa! Just shut up!" Daniel’s voice sounded cracked, frantic, and entirely unhinged. All the smooth corporate charm was gone, replaced by pure, unadulterated panic. "Your brilliant plan—your little brilliant idea about Claire being too stupid and weak to notice anything—has completely destroyed us!"
"My plan?!" Vanessa shrieked, panic spiking her adrenaline. "You were the one managing the books! You told me her name wasn't on anything! You said she was just a housewife who spent her days changing diapers!"
"She was a forensic accountant before we met, you absolute idiot!" Daniel screamed back, the sound of a fist slamming against a wall echoing through the speaker. "She didn't just notice. She documented everything. She took half the company shares, she froze our personal accounts, and she handed federal investigators a complete dossier linking us to Marcus Vale's bribery ring!"
Vanessa felt the room spin. The penthouse, the designer clothes, the luxury car Daniel had promised to buy her next month—it was all evaporating into thin air like smoke. "We need to fix this," she stammered, tears springing to her eyes. "We can hire high-priced lawyers, we can—"
"With what money, Vanessa?!" Daniel roared. "Every single cent we have is frozen! Every credit card is declined! I'm sitting in an empty house because she packed up everything—even the damn silverware—and left me with nothing but a yellow envelope!"
The line went dead with a harsh beep.

Vanessa dropped her phone onto the ruined carpet, sinking slowly to her knees as the reality of her situation set in. She had hitched her wagon to a man she thought was a titan of industry, only to discover he was a house of cards built on a foundation of sand, brought down by the very woman they had mocked over voicemail.
Little did Vanessa know, her brother Julian was already packing a bag, planning to catch the earliest international flight out of the country before federal marshals came knocking on his door. But Evelyn Hart was three steps ahead of them. By Sunday morning, red flags had been placed on every passport associated with the conspiracy. There was nowhere left to run.
