Chapter 4 - Sunday Calm Before the Storm

Sunday at the cliffside sanctuary was remarkably peaceful. The sound of the crashing waves acted as a natural white noise machine, washing away the lingering tension of the past few days. Noah woke up bright-eyed, asking if we could go down to the rocky shore to look for crabs and sea glass.
For the past eight years, my entire existence had revolved around managing Daniel’s erratic schedule, hosting dull corporate dinners where I had to pretend to find boring executives fascinating, and raising Noah while feeling like an invisible ghost in my own home. Now, standing on the wooden deck with a mug of steaming black coffee, watching Noah chase a seagull across the sand below, I felt a profound sense of lightness. I wasn't running away; I was running toward myself.
Evelyn joined me on the deck around nine o'clock, carrying a thick leather briefcase. She looked sharp and composed, wearing a tailored cream blazer despite it being the weekend.
"Good morning, Claire. Sleep well?" Evelyn asked, leaning against the railing beside me.
"Like a person who hasn't had a corporate leech attached to her jugular for forty-eight hours," I replied, taking a sip of coffee. "Any updates from the digital front?"
Evelyn smiled, flipping open her briefcase and pulling out a tablet. "Daniel spent most of last night trying to liquidate a secondary commercial property under a dummy corporation. Unfortunately for him, our emergency injunction covered commercial holdings as well. His title company flagged the transfer immediately and notified my office at 3:00 AM."
"He never could accept defeat gracefully," I murmured, watching the sunlight glint off the ocean. "He always believed that if he pushed hard enough, rules and laws would simply bend out of his way."
"Well, reality is about to hit him like a freight train tomorrow morning," Evelyn said, tapping the screen. "We have a 9:00 AM emergency hearing scheduled with Judge Harrison. We're filing for an immediate expedited divorce based on financial malfeasance, fraud, and corporate theft, alongside a full civil asset forfeiture request to restore your full ownership of Vance Construction."
"And Vanessa and her brother?"
"Julian Cole tried to book a one-way ticket to Zurich through a burner travel agency late last night," Evelyn said with a satisfied smirk. "Airport security flagged it automatically through our watchlist integration. Federal agents detained him at Terminal 4 three hours ago for questioning regarding the municipal kickbacks."
I nodded slowly. The web Daniel and Vanessa had woven so carefully over the past six months was unraveling at breakneck speed. They had thought they were untouchable because they operated in the shadows of high society, surrounded by wealth and influence. They forgot that the brightest lights often shine from the most unexpected places.
"And how is Noah handling everything?" Evelyn asked, her tone softening with genuine concern.
May you like
"He's resilient," I said, glancing down toward the beach where Noah was proudly holding up a jagged piece of green sea glass. "Children absorb our energy more than we realize. Because I'm calm, because I'm not weeping or screaming, he feels safe. We talked a little bit last night. I told him we were going on a new adventure, just the two of us, and that daddy needed some time to figure things out on his own. He accepted it much better than I expected."
"You're an exceptional mother, Claire," Evelyn said warmly, placing a hand on my shoulder. "And tomorrow, you're going to reclaim every single piece of your life that man tried to steal."
