Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After

The sun dipped entirely below the horizon, painting the evening sky in brilliant strokes of violet, indigo, and fiery gold. The ocean waves murmured a steady, rhythmic lullaby against the cliffs below, reminding us of the vast, beautiful world waiting just beyond our doorstep.

I stepped back out onto the patio, holding a tray of freshly baked dessert pastries as Evelyn and our friends gathered around the large wooden dining table under a canopy of twinkling fairy lights.

Noah bounded over, panting slightly from running with Captain, his face flushed with youthful energy and pure happiness.

"Mom, can I have a brownie?" he asked, flashing a bright, gap-toothed grin.

I smiled, shaking my head. "No, Evelyn. I wouldn't have believed them."

"And why is that?" she asked, her eyes sparkling with affection.

"Because back then, I thought my survival depended on someone else," I said softly, watching Noah race back outside with clean hands and a triumphant grin. "I didn't realize that the greatest power I would ever find was already inside me all along."

Evelyn smiled warmly, raising her glass high. "To the author of your own destiny."

We clinked our glasses together as the stars began to emerge overhead, burning
