Chapter 9 - The Sweetness of Freedom

Spring returned to New York, bringing vibrant flowers and warm breezes to Central Park.
It was Lily’s fifth birthday.
Unlike the chaotic, tense environment of the previous year, this celebration was held in a private, sunlit garden pavilion inside the park. The grass was lush and green, decorated with simple, beautiful white ribbons and fresh pink orchids.
A small group of genuine friends, community members, and staff from the foundation gathered to celebrate. There were no cameras, no cruel jokes, and no tension in the air—only warm laughter and genuine joy.
At the center of the main table sat a beautifully crafted birthday cake, decorated with handcrafted sugar orchids and five bright birthday candles.
Lily stood on a small wooden chair, wearing a bright yellow dress, her face glowing with pure happiness. "Make a wish, Lily!" the guests cheered.
Lily closed her eyes tightly, blew out all five candles in one big breath, and clapped her hands with delight. Everyone cheered.
Maya knelt beside her daughter, wiping a small speck of vanilla frosting from Lily’s nose. "What did you wish for, sweetie?"
Lily leaned in and whispered in Maya's ear, "I wished that we can stay this happy forever!"
Maya held her daughter close, tears of happiness filling her eyes. "We will, my love. I promise you."
Julian walked up to them, holding a small wrapped gift box. He knelt down beside Lily and handed it to her with a warm smile. "Happy birthday, little princess."
Lily opened the box to reveal a small silver bracelet engraved with a tiny orchid emblem, matching her mother's ring. "Thank you, Uncle Julian!" she squealed, hugging him tightly.
Julian stood up and looked at Maya. The unspoken warmth between them had grown deeper over the past year, built on a foundation of genuine trust, shared values, and deep mutual affection.

"You look beautiful today, Maya," Julian said softly.
"Thank you, Julian," Maya replied, her smile bright and clear. "For everything."
