Chapter 8 - The Final Settlement
One year after the incident at the birthday party, the final court session for the divorce and custody proceedings was held at the Manhattan Supreme Court.
Richard Vance sat at the defense table alongside a court-appointed public defender. He looked worn out, his hair graying at the temples, wearing a plain suit bought from a department store rack. He had taken a job as a mid-level clerk at a small logistics firm, earning a fraction of his former salary.
Maya sat at the plaintiff's table, calm, composed, and radiating quiet confidence.
The judge reviewed the final documents before striking the gavel. "In light of the evidence provided, including documented financial abuse, verbal abuse, and public endangerment, the court grants full legal and physical custody of Lily Vance to Maya Vanguard. Mr. Vance will be granted supervised visitation for two hours every second weekend, subject to continued compliance with court-ordered counseling."
The judge looked directly at Richard. "Mr. Vance, you had a devotion and loyalty from your wife that money could never buy, and you threw it away for vanity and cruelty. I hope you use these court sessions to reflect deeply on your actions."
With a final strike of the gavel, the proceedings were concluded.
As Maya walked out of the courtroom, Richard stepped forward, calling her name softly. "Maya... please."
Maya stopped and turned, looking at him without anger or hatred—only a quiet, profound indifference.
"I'm sorry," Richard whispered, his eyes filled with genuine regret. "I lost everything. My company, my family... my dignity."

She didn't wait for his response. She turned and walked down the grand marble hallway toward the sunlight waiting outside.
