Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Confrontation

The next morning, the glass doors of Vanguard Tower on Wall Street reflected the bright, unfiltered sunlight of Manhattan. At 9:00 AM sharp, Richard Vance stepped out of a black town car, buttoning his sharp navy blazer. Alongside him were his mother, Olivia, dressed in expensive pastel tweed, and Vanessa, who was busy checking the view count on her viral video.

"The video is up to four million views!" Vanessa giggled, adjusting her sunglasses. "People are calling her the 'Cake Queen' in the comments. She’ll never show her face in this city again."

Richard smiled, pulling his silk tie straight. "She brought it on herself. Trying to act high and mighty in front of my investors. Today, we secure the ten-million-dollar credit line from Vanguard Trust, and by next year, we buy that house in Long Island outright."

"You handled her perfectly, son," Olivia added smoothly. "A man needs a woman who knows her place, not a charity case."

They walked into the executive elevator, ascending to the 40th floor. The boardroom was massive, lined with mahogany tables and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the harbor. At the head of the table sat Julian Sterling, flanked by a panel of senior corporate attorneys and financial directors.

Richard walked in with brimming confidence, extending his hand. "Mr. Sterling! An absolute honor to finally meet you in person. We are ready to sign the finalized agreement for the Vance Financial expansion."

Julian did not stand up. He did not shake Richard’s hand. He simply pointed to the empty seats across from him. "Sit down, Mr. Vance."

Richard’s smile faltered slightly, but he sat, with Olivia and Vanessa sitting on either side of him. "I trust our financial reports met your high standards?"

"Your financial reports are adequate," Julian said, his voice cold as ice. "However, Vanguard Operating Procedures dictate that all major credit allocations above five million dollars must be personally authorized by the primary trustee of the estate."

"Primary trustee?" Richard blinked in confusion. "I thought you managed the fund, Mr. Sterling."

"I manage the investments," Julian corrected, taking a slow sip of black coffee. "The owner of the capital is someone else entirely. And she has just arrived."

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Richard turned, expecting an elderly tycoon or an international banker. Instead, his heart dropped into his stomach.

Walking into the room was Maya.

She wore a tailored ivory suit that fit her perfectly, her hair pinned back in an elegant, modern updo. Gone was the faded diner uniform, the tired eyes, and the lingering residue of pink frosting. She walked with absolute grace, her chin held high, accompanied by two senior attorneys in dark suits. Around her neck hung the silver chain, displaying the antique ring with the orchid emblem prominently against her pristine jacket.

Richard gasped, stumbling back in his chair. "Maya?! What the hell are you doing here? How did you get security to let you in?"

Olivia stood up, her face turning red with anger. "Are you stalking my son? Get out of here before we call the police!"

Vanessa pulled out her phone. "Is this another joke? Do you want another cake to the face?"

Julian banged his palm onto the oak table with a crack that sounded like a gunshot. "Silence!"

The room went dead quiet. Julian turned to Maya, stepping aside and offering her the seat at the absolute head of the table.

"Welcome, Ms. Vanguard," Julian said respectfully.

Maya took her seat, looking down at Richard, Olivia, and Vanessa with cool, unyielding eyes. "Hello, Richard. You told me last night that I was just a waitress with nowhere to go." She rested her hands on the table, revealing the matching signet ring on her finger. "As the sole heir to Vanguard Shipping and the primary owner of this trust, I believe it is my responsibility to review your loan application."
