Chapter 4 - The Fall of Vance Financial

Richard stood paralyzed, his eyes darting frantically between Maya, Julian, and the legal documents laid out on the table. "This... this is a mistake. This is a scam! She’s my wife! She works at a diner! Her mother was a seamstress!"

"Her mother was Eleanor Vanguard," Thomas interrupted smoothly, stepping forward with a leather-bound legal document. "Who went into hiding twenty years ago to protect her daughter from corporate espionage following the death of Arthur Vanguard. The DNA verification was completed at midnight last night. Ms. Maya Vanguard holds 51% of the total assets of this institution, including the capital backing your company's credit line."

Vanessa’s jaw dropped. She quickly locked her phone, realizing the gravity of the situation, but it was already too late.

Maya reached for the folder containing the loan agreement. She didn't tear it up or make a dramatic scene. She simply picked up a red pen, drew a single thick line across the signature page, and stamped it: REJECTED.

"Your credit line is denied, Richard," Maya said calmly. "Furthermore, as controlling shareholder, I am calling in the existing two-million-dollar short-term loan Vanguard Trust issued to Vance Financial three years ago. Payment is due in full by five o'clock today."

Richard’s face went completely pale. "Two million? Maya, please! That will bankrupt us! Our payroll, our accounts—everything is tied to that capital!"

"You should have thought about your accounts before you spent company funds renting a suburban house to humiliate me," Maya replied softly. She turned her gaze to Olivia. "And as for the family business, Olivia... the lease on your boutique in Manhattan is held by a subsidiary of Vanguard Properties. It has been terminated, effective immediately. You have twenty-four hours to clear your inventory."

Olivia collapsed back into her leather seat, clutching her chest in genuine panic. "You... you can't do this to us! We are your family!"

"Family doesn't shove a mother's face into her child's birthday cake while forty-seven people watch," Maya said, her voice firm, carrying the weight of five years of endured pain. "You made your choice last night. Today, I am making mine."

Vanessa tried to slide her phone into her bag, but Julian turned his stern gaze toward her. "Miss Miller. The video you uploaded to social media was filmed on private property without consent and accompanied by defamatory statements intended to damage Ms. Vanguard’s reputation. Vanguard Trust’s legal team has already filed a civil suit against you personally for defamation and cyberbullying, seeking damages of five million dollars."

Vanessa gasped, tears immediately streaming down her face. "Richard! Do something! Help me!"

Richard couldn't move. His entire world was crumbling around him, brick by brick, dollar by dollar. The woman he had treated like a servant, the woman he had dismissed as worthless, held his entire life in the palm of her hand.

"Get out of my boardroom," Maya said quietly.

Two uniformed security guards stepped into the room, motioning for Richard, Olivia, and Vanessa to leave. They walked out in utter humiliation, the heavy wooden doors shutting behind them with a definitive thud.
