Chapter 6 - Severing the Ties

The divorce proceedings of Whitmore v. Whitmore became one of the most high-profile legal battles of the year. But it was not the drawn-out, messy affair Nathan’s lawyers had hoped for. Claire’s preparation was too flawless, her evidence too overwhelming.

In a private deposition room in downtown Manhattan, Nathan sat opposite Claire, flanked by his legal team. He looked ten years older. His signature arrogance was entirely gone, replaced by a sullen, defeated exhaustion.

Claire sat beside Marcus, looking radiant and completely composed.

"Let’s make this simple," Marcus said, laying out the final settlement agreement. "We are prepared to waive criminal charges for corporate embezzlement if Mr. Whitmore signs this agreement today. Under these terms, Claire receives the Hamptons estate, forty percent of the liquidated marital assets, and her full fifteen percent shareholding in Whitmore Holdings, completely untethered from any voting trust controlled by the family."

Nathan’s lawyer looked at the document, then at Nathan. "Nathan... if we go to court, the evidence of tax fraud will become public record. The SEC will prosecute. You will likely face prison time. This is the best deal we can get."

Nathan stared at Claire. "You planned this. From the very moment Dr. Bennett gave you those results five years ago, you were waiting for this day."

"No, Nathan," Claire said, her voice quiet but firm. "I didn't plan your infidelity. I didn't plan your corporate fraud. I didn't plan Brooke’s deception. You did all of those things yourself. I simply chose not to stop you from destroying yourself. I gave you every opportunity to be an honest man, a good husband. You chose the lie. I chose the truth."

Nathan looked down at the paper. His hand shook as he picked up the pen. He knew that signing this meant the end of his status as a titan of New York society. He would be forced to sell his remaining shares to pay off his debts and avoid prosecution. He would be left with a fraction of his wealth, disgraced and alone.

With a heavy sigh, Nathan signed his name on the dotted line.

Claire took the document, checking the signature with a practiced eye. "Thank you, Nathan. I wish you the life you deserve."

She stood up, walked out of the room, and never looked back.
