Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

The headquarters of Whitmore Holdings occupied the top three floors of a sleek glass skyscraper in midtown Manhattan. The boardroom was a monument to wealth—polished mahogany, leather chairs, and a panoramic view of Central Park.

Nathan stood at the head of the table, looking pale but resolute. He had spent the last forty-eight hours trying to secure his position. Beside him sat Margaret, looking anxious but determined to protect the family name.

The board members were slowly filtering in, whispering among themselves. They had all received an emergency meeting notice from Claire, who held the proxy votes for her family’s significant shares.

"What is the meaning of this, Nathan?" asked Arthur Pendelton, the oldest and most influential board member, as he took his seat. "Claire called an emergency session. Is there a crisis we should be aware of?"

"There is no crisis, Arthur," Nathan said smoothly, adjusting his tie. "My wife is simply experiencing some... personal difficulties. She is attempting to use company time to air personal grievances. I assure you, everything is under control."

The double doors opened, and Claire walked in.

She did not look like a woman experiencing "personal difficulties." She wore a tailored charcoal-grey suit, her hair styled in a sharp, elegant bob. Behind her walked Marcus Vance, carrying a heavy briefcase.

"Good morning, everyone," Claire said, her voice clear and commanding. She took her seat at the opposite end of the table from Nathan.

"Claire, leave this room immediately," Margaret hissed. "This is a corporate board meeting, not a divorce court."

"Actually, Margaret, today it is both," Claire replied calmly. She nodded to Marcus, who opened his briefcase and distributed a thick packet of documents to every board member.

Nathan’s heart skipped a beat as he saw the cover page. "Claire, I warn you—"

"Quiet, Nathan. You’ve had your turn to speak for nine years. Now, it's mine," Claire said, her eyes flashing with a cold, sharp light.

"If you look at the documents before you," Claire addressed the board, "you will find clear, irrefutable evidence of systematic corporate embezzlement and tax fraud committed by our CEO, Nathan Whitmore."

A murmur of shock ran through the room.

"That's a lie!" Nathan shouted, slamming his hand on the table. "Those are legitimate business expenses!"

"Is paying the rent for your mistress’s SoHo penthouse a legitimate business expense, Nathan?" Claire asked, her voice dropping to a deadly calm. "Is buying her luxury jewelry and charging it to the public relations fund legitimate? Is transferring three million dollars of corporate capital to an offshore account in the Caymans—specifically designated for the trust of children who are not even yours—a legitimate business expense?"

Arthur Pendelton frowned, quickly flipping through the financial ledgers Claire had provided. "Nathan... what is this? These transactions are highly irregular. Who authorized these offshore transfers?"

"They were... they were investments!" Nathan stammered, his confidence evaporating. "Strategic investments!"

"They weren't investments," Claire said. She reached into her bag and pulled out another document. "They were payments to cover up a massive paternity scam. Two days ago, Nathan’s medical records from Lenox Hill were confirmed. Nathan is medically incapable of having children. He has known this—or rather, his records have shown this—for five years."

The board members stared at Nathan in disbelief.

"Furthermore," Claire continued, "the children Nathan has been parading as the heirs to Whitmore Holdings are not his. They are the biological children of Tyler Vance, the husband of Nathan’s assistant, Brooke Vance."

Claire placed the private investigator’s report, complete with DNA verification and surveillance photos of Brooke and Tyler, onto the table.

"Brooke Vance and her husband have been using Nathan to embezzle funds from this company for nearly four years," Claire said. "And Nathan, in his desperate attempt to hide his own medical condition and humiliate me, allowed them to do it. He was willing to dilute your shares and compromise the company's financial integrity just to protect his fragile ego."

Arthur Pendelton looked up from the report, his face dark with fury. "Nathan, is this true? Are these children not yours? Have you been funding your assistant's husband with corporate capital?"

Nathan opened his mouth, but no sound came out. He looked at the DNA reports, the photos of Brooke and Tyler kissing, the financial paper trail. The trap had closed, and he was completely, utterly caught.

"I... I didn't know," Nathan whispered, his voice cracking. "I thought... Brooke told me..."

"Whether you knew or not is irrelevant to the SEC, Nathan," Marcus Vance spoke up. "You signed off on those fraudulent transfers. You used corporate funds for personal, illicit purposes. That is a direct violation of your fiduciary duty. As of this moment, we are calling for a formal vote of the board to remove you as CEO immediately, pending a full forensic audit."

Margaret looked as though she might faint. "Claire... please. Think of the family. Think of the Whitmore name."

Claire looked at her mother-in-law with a cold, unyielding gaze. "The Whitmore name is no longer my concern, Margaret. My concern is protecting the investors, the employees, and myself from the absolute ruin your son has brought upon this house."

"All in favor of removing Nathan Whitmore as CEO," Arthur Pendelton said, raising his hand.

One by one, every single hand around the table went up.

Nathan collapsed back into his leather chair, staring blankly at the polished mahogany table. The empire he had inherited, the name he had used to terrorize others, was gone in an instant.
