Chapter 5 - The Fall of House Whitmore

The fallout from the boardroom meeting was swift and devastating. Within forty-eight hours, news of Nathan’s removal and the impending corporate audit leaked to the press. Whitmore Holdings' stock plummeted, and the financial world was abuzz with rumors of embezzlement and a sensational paternity scandal.

In his penthouse apartment, Nathan sat in the dark, surrounded by empty bottles. The phone rang constantly—reporters, lawyers, board members demanding explanations—but he ignored them all.

The door clicked open, and Brooke walked in. She was no longer wearing her designer clothes; she looked frantic, her hair disheveled, carrying a suitcase.

"Nathan!" she cried, running to him. "We have to leave. The police... the lawyers... they’ve freeze-framed my bank accounts! They’re looking for Tyler! They say we’ve committed fraud!"

Nathan slowly looked up at her. The woman he had thought was his perfect, adoring partner now looked like a stranger. A parasite.

"Did you love him?" Nathan asked, his voice hollow.

"What? Nathan, please, we don't have time for this—"

"Did you love Tyler?" Nathan roared, standing up and grabbing her shoulders. "Did you laugh at me every time I held those kids? Did you mock me behind my back while I paid for your apartment, your clothes, your husband’s lifestyle?"

Brooke trembled, tears streaming down her face. "Nathan, I had to! Tyler was threatening to expose us! I did love you, in my own way... but I needed to secure a future for my children!"

"They are not my children!" Nathan screamed, pushing her away. "They are a lie! Your entire life is a lie!"

"And what about you?" Brooke spat back, her desperation turning to venom. "You used me too! You only wanted me because you wanted to prove you were better than Claire! You wanted to punish her for not giving you what you couldn't even produce yourself! You’re barren, Nathan! You’ve always been barren! You’re half a man, and everyone knows it now!"

Nathan slapped her. The force of the blow knocked Brooke to the floor. She gasped, holding her cheek, staring at him with pure hatred.

"Get out," Nathan whispered, his chest heaving. "Get out of my sight before I kill you."

Brooke scrambled to her feet, grabbed her suitcase, and fled the apartment, leaving Nathan alone in the dark once more.

Meanwhile, at the Whitmore estate in Greenwich, Margaret was facing her own reckoning. Claire had arrived with a team of movers and a legal injunction.

"What is the meaning of this?" Margaret demanded, watching as movers packed up valuable paintings and antique furniture.

"This house was purchased with marital funds, Margaret," Claire said, standing in the grand foyer. "Under the terms of our divorce settlement, which your son's lawyers have already advised him to sign, this property is being sold. The proceeds will be split, with sixty percent going to me due to the dissipation of assets."

"You are destroying us!" Margaret cried, her voice cracking. "We will have nothing left! The family name is ruined!"

"You destroyed yourselves, Margaret," Claire said calmly. "You knew Nathan was treating me like garbage. You encouraged him to have affairs because you wanted an heir. You chose to ignore his cruelty because it suited your pride. Now, you get to live with the consequences of that choice."

Claire turned her back on her mother-in-law, walking out into the bright afternoon sun. For the first time in nine years, she felt completely, beautifully free.
