Chapter 9 - Karma's Reflection

One rainy evening, five years after the night that changed my life, I was walking to my car after an event for the foundation. As I passed a small, run-down diner near the edge of the business district, I caught sight of a man through the window.

It was Garrett.

He was sitting alone at a booth, wearing a faded, generic suit. His hair was greying, and his face bore the heavy lines of a man defeated by life. After the divorce and his public disgrace, no reputable firm would hire him. He had lost his wealth, his status, and the shallow friends who only loved him for his checkbook. He was working as a low-level insurance claims adjuster, living in a cramped apartment, entirely forgotten by the world he once tried so hard to impress.

I stood in the rain, looking at him. I thought I would feel a surge of triumph or vindication. But all I felt was a profound sense of closure.

Garrett had achieved exactly what he deserved: absolute insignificance. He had traded a lifetime of unconditional love and a beautiful son for a fleeting moment of selfish indulgence, and he would have to live the rest of his days knowing the exact price of his choices.

I turned away from the window and walked toward my car, leaving the ghost of my past exactly where he belonged—in the dark, looking out at a world he could no longer touch.
