Chapter 8 - Pieces of Tomorrow

Julian didn't look at me with the pity that most people did when they heard my story. He looked at me with deep understanding. Later, I learned that he had lost his younger sister to leukemia when they were teenagers, which was what inspired him to dedicate his life to helping sick children.
Our friendship grew slowly, built on a foundation of shared values, mutual respect, and long conversations over coffee. He never pushed me to move faster than I was ready for. He understood that my heart had a permanent scar, and he never tried to make me forget Ethan. Instead, he honored Ethan’s memory alongside me.
One Saturday afternoon, Julian invited me to his art studio. On the central easel was a large canvas covered in vibrant blues, greens, and golds. In the center of the painting, hidden subtly among the stars of a painted galaxy, was the faint, beautiful silhouette of a little boy holding a green dinosaur.
Tears welled up in my eyes, but they weren't tears of sorrow. They were tears of profound gratitude.
