Chapter 7 - A Chance Encounter

Two years after the tragedy, I was visiting the hospital to oversee the opening of a new pediatric wing funded entirely by Ethan's foundation. The wing was bright, filled with colorful murals of superheroes and dinosaurs.

As I was leaving the administrator’s office, I literally bumped into a man carrying a stack of children's books. The books scattered across the linoleum floor.

"Oh, I am so sorry!" he said, immediately dropping to his knees to gather them.

"No, it was my fault, I wasn't looking," I said, kneeling down to help him. I picked up a book about a little green dinosaur and froze. A bitter-sweet wave of memory washed over me.

The man noticed my hesitation. He had kind, crinkling eyes and a gentle demeanor that instantly felt grounding. "That’s a favorite around here," he said softly. "I’m Julian, by the way. I’m the pediatric art therapist."

"Clara," I said, handing him the book.

"Clara... as in, the Ethan Foundation?" Julian asked, his eyes widening with genuine respect. When I nodded, he smiled warmly. "It is an honor to meet you. The work you’ve done here... it’s changed everything for these kids. You’ve given them a safe place to just be kids, even when they’re sick."

We ended up walking out of the hospital together, talking about the healing power of art and storytelling for grieving children. For the first time in over two years, I found myself laughing—a real, genuine laugh that reached my eyes.
