Chapter 8 - A New Chapter

The autumn air in our new neighborhood crisp and clean, carrying the scent of fallen leaves and wood smoke.
On a bright Saturday morning in October, Holly skipped down the wooden front steps of our new home, her backpack slung over her shoulders, wearing her favorite yellow duck sneakers. She was heading to her very first day at her new elementary school.
“Mommy, hurry up! I’m going to miss the bus!” she called out, turning around with a radiant, gap-toothed smile that melted my soul.
“I’m coming, sweetie!” I laughed, jogging down the steps to meet her, holding her lunchbox and a warm thermos of apple cider.
As the yellow school bus rumbled down the street and came to a smooth stop, I watched my daughter climb aboard, waving enthusiastically through the tinted glass before finding a seat near the front. The bus pulled away, merging into the morning traffic under a brilliant blue autumn sky.

I stood on the sidewalk, taking a deep, grounding breath of the crisp air. For the first time in years, my chest didn't ache with anxiety. There was no impending dread, no ticking clock of medical emergencies, no toxic shadow of a deceitful husband hovering over my shoulder.
There was only peace. There was only strength. There was only the bright, limitless future stretching out before my daughter and me.
