Chapter 7 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

Six months after our arrival in Boston, Holly’s health was so robust that Dr. Evans officially cleared her to return to regular schooling, provided she came back for routine quarterly check-ups.

We decided not to return to our old home. There were too many painful memories attached to those walls, too many ghosts of Derek’s betrayal lingering in the hallways. Instead, we purchased a bright, spacious Victorian home in a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood just outside of Boston—a house with a sprawling backyard, a tire swing hanging from an ancient oak tree, and a sunroom where Holly could paint and read to her heart's content.

Financially, the transition was completely secure. Calvin and Victoria had successfully dismantled Derek’s hidden corporate network, recovering every stolen dollar and redirecting it back into an unbreakable, court-certified trust exclusively managed for Holly’s future education and welfare.

Derek’s life, by contrast, had completely unraveled.

According to legal briefs delivered by Victoria’s office, Derek had been formally indicted on three counts of corporate fraud, grand larceny, and perjury. Facing a potential prison sentence of up to ten years, he had attempted to cut a plea deal, but prosecutors had rejected it due to the severity of his financial predation and his utter lack of remorse.

Vanessa had given birth to a healthy baby boy two months prior, but she was now facing the grim reality of raising a child alone while dealing with mounting legal debts and the social fallout of her actions. She had tried calling my personal phone twice during our transition to Boston, but her number remained permanently blocked. Some bridges aren't meant to be rebuilt; some fires burn so hot that nothing is left behind except ash.
