Chapter 5 - New Horizons in Boston

The transition to Boston’s premier pediatric oncology center felt like entering a different world. Gone were the sterile, overcrowded corridors of our local hospital; here, the facility combined cutting-edge medical technology with a compassionate, holistic approach designed specifically for pediatric recovery.
For the first two weeks, my entire existence was consumed by Holly’s treatment schedule. The immunotherapy sessions were grueling, causing fatigue and nausea, but Dr. Evans—the lead specialist in Boston—assured us that the targeted response in Holly’s cellular markers was textbook perfection.
Calvin had ensured we were set up in a fully furnished, sunlit penthouse apartment overlooking the Charles River, just five minutes from the medical center. He had also assigned a dedicated administrative assistant, a sharp and kind woman named Eleanor, to manage the endless stream of legal paperwork, medical bills, and household logistics so I could focus entirely on my daughter.
“You look like you actually slept for more than four hours tonight, Marissa,” Eleanor noted warmly as she handed me a steaming cup of coffee in the hospital family lounge one Tuesday morning.
“I did,” I smiled, taking a grateful sip. “Holly actually slept through the entire night without needing her vitals checked every hour. Dr. Evans said her white blood cell count is stabilizing faster than anticipated.”
“That’s wonderful news,” Eleanor said, pulling a tablet from her bag. “Speaking of stability, Victoria Vance wanted me to give you a quick update on the legal proceedings back home.”
I set my coffee cup down. “Go ahead.”
“Derek tried to file an emergency countersuit claiming financial abuse and demanding spousal support during the separation,” Eleanor explained, a faint smirk playing on her lips. “Needless to say, Judge Sterling threw it out of court within five minutes after Victoria presented the forensic audit detailing his two-year embezzlement scheme and hidden offshore accounts.”
“What about Vanessa?” I asked.

“Vanessa moved back in with her parents, though according to our investigators, relations are exceptionally tense,” Eleanor replied. “Her parents are horrified by the scandal, and Derek has already abandoned her to try and salvage whatever legal loopholes he thinks he has left. He’s currently facing potential criminal indictment for corporate fraud and falsifying financial documents at Vantage Group.”
I felt a quiet sense of closure wash over me. Karma wasn't an abstract concept anymore; it was a cold, efficient machine driven by accountability and justice.
