Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

By the fourth day, the pressure on Derek and Vanessa reached a boiling point. Without access to their hidden funds, corporate salaries, or credit lines, the reality of their situation came crashing down with terrifying speed.
Victoria Vance had filed an expedited motion for asset seizure and foreclosure on the luxury apartment Derek had secretly leased for Vanessa. The landlord, a corporate entity associated with one of Calvin’s business partners, served them an immediate eviction notice for breach of contract and fraudulent financial backing.
Word reached us through mutual acquaintances that Vanessa had broken down crying in the lobby of her apartment building, surrounded by packed suitcases and designer bags she could no longer afford to insure, let alone keep.
Meanwhile, Dr. Patel brought us extraordinary news regarding Holly.
“The preliminary blood work and stabilization metrics look remarkably positive, Marissa,” Dr. Patel said, reviewing a glowing tablet of test results in the hospital office. “The specialized immunotherapy trial in Boston has an immediate opening due to a cancellation. Because Calvin’s foundation has already wired the preliminary sponsorship funds, we can charter a private medical flight for Holly tonight.”
I felt tears prick the corners of my eyes—tears of sheer, overwhelming relief. “A private flight? Is she strong enough?”
“With the specialized onboard medical team Calvin arranged, she will be safer and more comfortable than traveling commercial,” Dr. Patel reassured me with a warm smile. “Your daughter is a fighter, Marissa. With this treatment, her remission probability jumps significantly.”
That evening, the hospital courtyard was lit by the amber glow of streetlights as a specialized transport team wheeled Holly gently toward the waiting medical van that would take us to the airfield.
Captain Bun, her stuffed rabbit, was clutched tightly in her arms. She looked up at me with bright, hopeful eyes. “Mommy, are we going on an airplane?”
“Yes, sweetie,” I whispered, kissing her forehead. “We’re going on a big adventure to make you completely better.”
As the van doors closed, I caught sight of two figures lingering near the outer gates of the hospital parking lot.
It was Derek and Vanessa.
They looked disheveled. Derek’s expensive suit was wrinkled, his hair unwashed, and Vanessa stood beside him in a bulky jacket, her face pale and tear-stained, clutching a cheap plastic grocery bag containing her remaining belongings.

As my gaze locked onto them, Derek took a desperate step forward toward the van, raising his hands in a silent plea for mercy.
I didn't flinch. I didn't look away. I simply turned my back, climbed into the front seat of the lead escort vehicle alongside Calvin, and watched them fade into the distance as our convoy drove away toward the airfield.
