Chapter 9 - Healing Broken Pieces

A year after the finalization of the divorce, Bradley requested a meeting at a local park during one of his scheduled supervised visitation hours.
He sat on a bench near the playground, watching Jamie kick a soccer ball with Julian a short distance away. Bradley had completed his court-mandated classes, but the distance between him and his son was now vast. Jamie treated him with polite indifference—the kind reserved for a distant relative rather than a loving parent.
"He looks happy," Bradley said quietly as I walked up to the bench.
"He is happy," I replied, standing a few feet away.
Bradley looked down at his hands. "I lost everything, Clara. My standing at the firm, Caroline... my home. But losing Jamie’s trust... that’s the part that hurts every single day."
"You didn't lose it, Bradley," I said, my voice calm, free of anger or malice. "You threw it away. You made a choice on that bus, and Jamie was old enough to understand what your choice meant."
Bradley swallowed hard, tears welling in his eyes. "Is there any chance... can we ever rebuild?"
May you like
"You can rebuild a relationship with him slowly, if you remain consistent and put his needs first," I told him honestly. "But as for us, Jamie and I have already built our new life. And it’s a good life."
Bradley nodded slowly, accepting the truth he could no longer deny. He got up, walked over to Jamie, gave him a brief, gentle hug goodbye, and walked away down the park path, alone.
