Chapter 5 - Burning Bridges
The aftermath was swift and uncompromising.
When Bradley realized his career trajectory was crumbling, his demeanor shifted from arrogant dismissiveness to desperate fury. He tried calling me dozens of times, leaving frantic voicemails alternating between tearful pleas for forgiveness and threats of legal action.
"You're destroying everything we built!" he yelled in one voicemail. "Over a mistake! I panicked at the bus crash, Clara! It was an instinct!"
I didn't reply. Eleanor handled all communication.
Within a week, the news of Bradley’s behavior spread through our social circles. The pristine image he had cultivated for years vanished overnight. Friends who had seen the news of the bus accident were horrified to learn the true details of what had occurred. Parents from Jamie’s school expressed outrage, leading the school administration to formally request that Caroline remove Ava from the preschool due to the ongoing legal disruption and public friction.
Caroline, realizing that Bradley was no longer the wealthy, rising partner she thought he was, began to distance herself. When court orders froze the LLC account Bradley used to pay her expenses, her apartment rent fell into arrears.
One evening, Sarah’s husband brought home a delivery of court filings. Eleanor had successfully secured temporary sole custody of Jamie, full possession of our marital home, and an order requiring Bradley to pay full medical alimony and legal fees pending final trial.
