Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Facade

The surgery took three hours. The orthopedic surgeon reassured me that while the injury was severe—a compound fracture to his tibia—the bone would heal with proper casting, physical therapy, and time. When Jamie was finally rolled into his recovery room, his face was pale, his small form swallowed by the white hospital sheets.
I sat beside him, gently stroking his hair. Bradley tried to enter the room twice, but each time, I calmly asked the hospital security staff to enforce the visitor restriction list I had updated. Since I was listed as Jamie’s primary guardian and next of kin on hospital intake, Bradley was asked to step outside.
By morning, Eleanor’s team had already set the wheels in motion.
While Bradley had been spending his evenings assembling furniture for Caroline and funding her lifestyle under the guise of "helping a friend in need," he had overlooked one vital detail: I had kept meticulous records of our household finances.
When Bradley persuaded me to leave my position at the museum years ago, I didn't simply become a passive observer. I managed the family investments, maintained the deeds, and tracked every transfer made from our joint accounts.
Eleanor discovered that over the past six months, Bradley had quietly funneled over eighty thousand dollars from our shared accounts into an LLC registered under Caroline’s name. He had financed her apartment deposit, paid her daughter's tuition, and even covered her lease on a luxury SUV—all while telling me our household budget needed trimming.
"This is dissipation of marital assets," Eleanor explained over a secure call that afternoon. "Not only will he have to reimburse every cent to the marital estate, but this clear evidence of financial betrayal and neglect will severely impact his standing in custody negotiations."
I looked at Jamie, who was slowly opening his eyes. His gaze met mine, clear and quiet.
"Mom?" he whispered.
"I'm right here, sweetie," I said, kissing his forehead.
"Is Dad still with that girl?" he asked softly.
May you like
I swallowed the lump in my throat, holding his tiny hand in both of mine. "Dad isn't here, Jamie. But I am. And I will never, ever leave your side."
Jamie nodded slowly, a faint, sad smile appearing on his face. "Okay. That’s better."
