Chapter 10 - The Promise of Tomorrow

Two years later, the evening sun bathed our backyard garden in golden light.
We were hosting a small gathering to celebrate the opening of a major museum wing I had spent months curating. Fairy lights hung from the branches of the oak trees, and the air was filled with laughter and cheerful conversation.
Sarah and her family were there, along with my colleagues from the museum. In the center of the lawn, Julian was playing catch with Jamie. Jamie, now seven years old, was taller, confident, and radiant with health. His laugh rang clear across the yard as he caught a high throw and landed gracefully on the grass.
Julian cheered, clapping his hands enthusiastically. Jamie ran over and gave Julian a high-five before running toward me.
"Mom! Did you see that catch?" Jamie exclaimed, catching his breath.
"I saw it, fast catch!" I laughed, wiping a speck of dirt from his cheek. "Are you having fun?"
"The best fun," Jamie said, looking up at Julian, who walked over and gently placed an arm around my waist.
"You did great out there, champ," Julian said warmly.
Jamie looked at both of us, his expression turning thoughtful for a moment. He looked back at the house, then down at his shoes, and finally up at me with bright, clear eyes.
"Mom?" he asked.
"Yes, sweetie?"
"Remember when I told you at the hospital that I didn't think we needed Dad anymore?"
I paused, holding my breath slightly, remembering that dark afternoon two years ago. "I remember, Jamie."
Jamie smiled—a bright, unfiltered smile that held no leftover pain, only complete contentment.
"I was right," Jamie said happily. "Because we have everything we need right here."
He turned and ran back toward his cousins on the lawn, his shouts of joy blending with the evening breeze.

Julian pulled me closer, kissing the top of my head as we watched our son run freely across the grass. I rested my head against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of a man who showed up, who stayed, and who loved us completely.
The painful morning on that rainy country road was now just a distant shadow. We had walked through the fire, left behind the illusions, and built a real, unshakeable home on a foundation of truth, courage, and unconditional love.
