Chapter 7 - The Trial Begins
The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity on the opening day of The State of State vs. Caleb Vance. The air was thick with tension, the gallery filled with journalists, true-crime bloggers, and Caleb’s wealthy family, all wearing matching silver ribbons to symbolize their "solidarity" with him.
Caleb sat at the defense table, wearing a tailored navy suit. He had grown out his hair slightly, making him look softer, more intellectual, like a misunderstood academic rather than a criminal. When I walked in, he turned and looked directly at me. He didn't scowl. He gave me a gentle, pitying smile, playing the role of the heartbroken husband for the jury.
The prosecution opened with a powerful statement, detailing the chemical cocktail Caleb had created and the psychological imprisonment of our daughter. But the defense countered with terrifying efficacy.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury," the lead defense attorney, a ruthless man named Richard Sterling, announced. "What you are seeing here is not a case of child abuse. What you are seeing is a tragic manifestation of a mother's fractured mind. Clara Brooks has a history of severe psychological instability. She was the one who bought these chemicals online. She was the one who applied them to her daughter to create a crisis, seeking the attention and sympathy that she felt her husband was no longer providing her."
I sat in the front row of the gallery, squeezing Eleanor's hand so hard my knuckles turned white.
They brought out their medical expert, who testified that the chemical trace elements on the towels could easily have been planted days before. They brought out character witnesses—our old neighbors, Caleb’s co-workers—who testified that Caleb was an angelic, doting father, while I was often reclusive and anxious.
With every passing hour, I could feel the jury slipping away. They were looking at me with suspicion. The defense was successfully spinning a web of doubt.
