Chapter 4 - Unearthing the Truth

The next forty-eight hours were a blur of sterile rooms, fluorescent lighting, and endless questions. Lily and I were taken to a specialized children's hospital where a team of forensic pediatricians and child psychologists took over.
I sat in a viewing room behind a two-way mirror, watching a gentle child psychologist named Dr. Evans sit on the floor with Lily, playing with a set of anatomically correct dolls. My heart was in my throat. I was terrified of what Lily might reveal.
"Lily," Dr. Evans said softly, holding up a girl doll. "When you and Daddy played the submarine game, did Daddy ever touch you in places that made you feel uncomfortable?"
Lily shook her head quickly, clutching her stuffed bunny. "No. Daddy just said my legs were broken and we had to fix them."
"Your legs were broken?" Dr. Evans asked.
"Yes. He said they were too weak. He made me put them in the magic water, and then he made me drink the sleepy juice so my legs wouldn't hurt."
In the observation room, I gasped, covering my mouth. Sleepy juice.
A detective entering the room behind me, Detective Miller, tapped my shoulder. "Mrs. Vance? We just got the toxicology reports back from the hospital lab. We ran a panel on Lily's blood, and we also tested the paper cup and the stained towel we recovered from your house."
"What was it?" I asked, my voice trembling.
"The white substance is a heavily concentrated, homemade mixture of industrial-grade numbing agents, DMSO—which forces chemicals to absorb rapidly through the skin—and high doses of clonidine, a prescription sedative," Detective Miller said, his face grim. "The 'sleepy juice' Lily mentioned? It's a liquid sedative. He was systematically drugging her to keep her paralyzed and compliant during these sessions."
"But why?" I cried, tears streaming down my face. "Why would he do that to his own daughter if he wasn't... if he wasn't abusing her that way?"

"We searched his digital history and his private storage unit this morning," Detective Miller said hesitatingly, looking at me with deep pity. "Your husband isn't a medical doctor, Mrs. Vance, but he has been participating in dark web forums dedicated to illegal human experimentation and proxy medical abuse. He was using Lily as a test subject for a homemade paralysis compound he was trying to develop and sell online. He was documenting her physical degradation over months."
The room spun. I caught myself on the edge of the desk. The man I loved, the man I shared a bed with, wasn't just a monster. He was a monster who viewed our beautiful, innocent daughter as a laboratory rat.
