Chapter 5 - The Web of Lies

The revelation of Caleb's true activities sent shockwaves through our entire lives. Within days, the story leaked to the local media. Headlines dubbed him "The Suburban Alchemist," and suddenly, camera crews were parked at the edge of our neighborhood.

I refused to watch the news. My sole focus was Lily. The medical evaluation revealed that the months of chemical exposure had caused mild nerve damage in her lower legs, explaining why she had been looking so exhausted and clumsy lately. Thank God, the doctors assured me it was reversible with time and physical therapy, but the psychological scars ran much deeper.

One afternoon, my phone rang. It was my mother-in-law, Evelyn.

"Clara, how could you do this?" Evelyn sobbed into the line, her voice filled with accusation. "Caleb is a good boy! He would never hurt Lily! You’ve fabricated this entire thing because of your jealousy!"

"Evelyn, the police found the chemicals. They found his journals," I said, trying to keep my voice steady for Lily’s sake, who was drawing across the room.

"They forced him to confess! He called me from the detention center. He said you've been mixing those things into her baths to frame him so you could get a divorce and take his money!" Evelyn shrieked. "We are hiring the best defense attorneys in the state. You will not destroy my son."

She slammed the phone down. I stared at the receiver, feeling a cold chill. Caleb’s family was wealthy, deeply connected, and utterly blind to his darkness. They were going to fight.

An hour later, my attorney, Eleanor Vance (no relation, ironically), called me with a warning. "Clara, Caleb’s defense team is going for a total annihilation strategy. They are going to subpoena your medical records. They’re going to highlight your past treatment for mild depression after your father died. They want to paint you as a psychotic, vengeful mother who is suffering from Munchausen syndrome by proxy and framing her husband."

"But the video!" I argued. "The video shows him threatening her!"

"They are going to argue that the video is taken out of context—that he was merely trying to manage a difficult child who refused medical treatment for her skin condition. They’ve already found a corrupt medical 'expert' willing to testify that the chemical levels could have been mixed by anyone in the house."

I looked over at Lily. She had dropped her crayon and was staring out the window, her little shoulders hunched. I realized then that saving my daughter wasn't going to be a quick rescue. It was going to be a war. And I couldn't afford to lose.
