Chapter 3 - The Interrogation

The flashing red and blue lights illuminated our quiet suburban street, casting long, eerie shadows across the living room walls. Two police officers entered the house, their expressions grim and alert. I sat on the sofa, clutching Lily, who was wrapped in three different blankets, still shivering violently.

Caleb stood by the fireplace, his hands raised non-threateningly, the picture of a cooperative, deeply concerned husband.

"Officers, thank God you're here," Caleb said smoothly, stepping forward. "My wife... she’s been under an immense amount of stress lately. Postpartum anxiety that never really went away. She had a panic attack tonight and completely misinterpreted a normal routine."

The older officer, a stern man named Officer Davis, looked at me, then at Caleb. "And what routine would that be, sir?"

"Lily suffers from severe eczema and a rare pediatric circulation issue in her lower limbs," Caleb explained effortlessly, his tone full of medical authority. "Our pediatrician recommended specialized, timed medicated baths. Clara forgets things due to her anxiety medications. I was just applying the prescribed sulfur-and-menthol compound. I use a timer to ensure the skin absorbs it properly without causing chemical burns."

I stared at him, horrified by how easily the lies poured from his mouth. For a split second, I saw Officer Davis’s partner nod, seemingly convinced by Caleb's calm demeanor.

"He's lying!" I cried out, pulling Lily closer. "He tells her it's a secret! He told her I would leave if she talked about it! Look at her—she's terrified of him!"

"Clara, honey, you know she gets anxious during treatments," Caleb said softly, taking a step toward us. "Show the officers the bottle, it's right in—"

"I have video," I interrupted, my voice sharp as a knife.

Caleb paused mid-stride. A microscopic twitch developed in his jaw.

I pulled out my phone and handed it to Officer Davis. "Watch it. Listen to what he says to her. Listen to how he threatens her with me leaving."

The two officers crowded around the small screen. As the audio played—Caleb’s cold, calculated voice demanding Lily stay still, the psychological manipulation about making me mad—the atmosphere in the room shifted instantly. The younger officer’s hand dropped casually to his holster.

Officer Davis handed the phone back to me, his expression hardened into stone. He turned to Caleb. "Mr. Vance, you're going to need to come down to the station with us for questioning."

"This is a misunderstanding," Caleb said, his voice finally losing its smooth edge, a frantic undertone creeping in. "That's standard psychological compliance for a child who hates medical treatments! Ask our doctor!"

"We will," Officer Davis said. "Hand behind your back, sir."

As the handcuffs clicked into place, Caleb looked at me over his shoulder. The mask of the loving husband was completely gone. In its place was a look of pure, unadulterated hatred. "You've ruined this family, Clara. You'll regret this."

I didn't answer. I just held my daughter tighter as they led him out into the night.
