Chapter 8 - The Sealed Room

David gripped the keycard, his eyes filling with tears, but he knew his father was right. He grabbed my hand and ran toward the kitchen pantry, pulling Lily and Martha out.
"To Mom's room! Move!" David shouted.
We sprinted down the lower hallway as armed men in black tactical gear burst into the main foyer behind us. Gunfire shattered the display cases in the living room. Thomas stood his ground near the control panel, using his master authority code to slow down their progress by triggering internal security doors one by one.
We reached Catherine's former room. David slammed the keycard against the reader. The heavy mahogany door unlocked with a deep mechanical click, and we scrambled inside, shoving the door shut behind us. David immediately threw the manual deadbolts.
The room went quiet.
It was completely isolated from the chaos outside. The thick soundproof walls muffled the gunshots and shouts into dull, distant thuds.
Lily collapsed onto the bed, trembling violently, clutching the silver flash drive to her chest. Martha wrapped her arms around the young girl, whispering prayers of comfort.
I looked around the room. It was exactly as Thomas had prepared it—the medical equipment, the air purifier softly humming in the corner, the crisp white linens, and Catherine's favorite painting of a quiet ocean sunrise hanging on the wall.
This wasn't a room of death. Thomas had turned it into a sanctuary—a fortress within a fortress designed to keep a helpless girl alive.
"The air vents," David said, pointing upward. "They run on a secondary backup power generator. We can use the maintenance terminal in the corner to access the mansion's secondary communication relay!"
I ran over to the medical monitoring station. Beside the heart monitor was an embedded touch-screen interface used for telemedicine during Catherine's final days.
"It's connected to a satellite uplink!" I said excitedly, my fingers flying across the screen. "Thomas kept an independent satellite link here for emergency medical consultations!"
"Can you send a signal to the sheriff?" David asked, standing near the door with a heavy brass lamp raised in his hands, ready to fight if the lock failed.
"I can," I said, typing rapidly. "But the system requires a two-factor encryption key to bypass the master lockdown Robert triggered."
I looked at Lily.
Lily looked up from the bed, her brown eyes shining with sudden understanding. She scrambled off the bed, approached the monitor, and inserted the silver flash drive into the terminal's USB port.
"My father designed this code," Lily said, her voice growing stronger and clearer than ever before. "He taught me the root sequence when I was ten years old. He said if I was ever in danger, his math would protect me."
Her delicate, bruised fingers moved across the keyboard with surprising speed and precision. Lines of complex green code flooded the black screen.
ENCRYPTION OVERRIDDEN. SATELLITE LINK ESTABLISHED.
"It worked!" I cried. "Sending GPS coordinates and an emergency silent alarm to the King County Sheriff's Department and Federal Law Enforcement!"
At that exact moment, a heavy impact slammed against the outside of the mahogany door.
BOOM!
The wood groaned under the force of a battering ram or heavy boot.
"Open the door!" a harsh voice yelled from the hallway. It was Arthur Collins—Lily's uncle. "Give me the flash drive, Lily, or I will burn this entire house to the ground with your father's old friend inside!"
David took a deep breath, stepping in front of us, clutching the brass lamp tightly.
"They're going to breach the door," David whispered, looking at me with a fierce, loving gaze. "Nancy, stay behind me."
"We stand together, David," I replied, grabbing a heavy silver tray from the nightstand.
Outside, the heavy thuds against the door grew faster and more violent.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The hinges began to bend. The wood splintered.
And then, behind the locked door, Lily didn't scream this time. She stood tall beside us, her chin raised, no longer a terrified victim, but a brave young woman fighting for her life and her father's memory.
