Chapter 5 - The Shattered Trust

The revelation hung in the air like a heavy toxic cloud.

David rushed forward and knelt beside Lily, gently helping her up from the floor and guiding her to a nearby sofa. Martha quickly brought over a warm blanket and a glass of water, her eyes filled with tears of sympathy for the frail girl.

"Someone in our family?" David asked, his voice shaking with disbelief. "Lily, who? Did my father know about this?"

Lily wrapped the heavy wool blanket around her shoulders, taking a small sip of water before speaking. Her breathing was still shallow, but the terror in her eyes had given way to a quiet, desperate resolve.

"Thomas found me three weeks ago," Lily began, her voice steadying slightly. "I was being held in a private facility in Oregon. They kept me under heavy sedatives, telling the doctors I was delusional and suicidal. But Thomas... he realized what was happening. He knew my father's signature encryption style, and he noticed that someone was secretly attempting to sell my father's original algorithms on the dark web."

I put the pieces together in my head. "Thomas tracked down the source of the stolen code, and it led him straight to you."

"Yes," Lily nodded. "Thomas bribed a security nurse to extract me from the clinic in the middle of the night. But Arthur had legal custody of me. The only way Thomas could legally shield me from being dragged back to Oregon immediately was to claim I was under his personal protection as a dependent spouse or ward before Arthur could file an interstate emergency order."

"That's why he staged the wedding," David realized, slamming his fist onto the coffee table. "He couldn't tell us the truth because he didn't know who in the family was working with Arthur!"

"He suspected everyone," Lily whispered, looking at David with deep pity. "Even you, David. Even Hannah. Arthur had an inside partner who was feeding him company codes and family credentials. Thomas brought me here, to his dead wife's room, because it was the only room in the house equipped with an isolated medical filter and an independent security grid that wasn't connected to the main house network."

"The blind spot," I murmured. "Thomas didn't create a blind spot to hide something wicked—he created it to keep the insider from spying on you!"

Suddenly, the front doors burst open.

Thomas walked in, drenched from the rain, followed closely by Hannah and Robert. Thomas's face was flushed with anger, his eyes darting immediately to Lily sitting on the sofa.

"Lily!" Thomas barked, striding across the room. "Why are you out of your room? I told you to stay locked inside!"

"Dad, stop it!" David shouted, stepping between his father and Lily. "We know everything! We know about Julian, we know about Arthur, and we know why she's here!"

Thomas froze in his tracks. He looked at David, then at me, and finally at Lily. The hard, cold exterior he had worn for weeks suddenly crumbled, revealing a weary, broken old man who looked like he was carrying the weight of the entire world on his shoulders.

"You found the files," Thomas said quietly.

"Yes, we did," I said, stepping forward. "And we also know that Arthur's men just tried to breach the gates using an internal override code. Someone gave them access, Thomas."

Hannah looked completely bewildered. "What are you talking about? What override code? Who is Arthur?"

Robert, however, remained entirely composed. He stood near the entrance, his hands folded neatly in front of his coat, his expression unreadable.

"Thomas," Robert said softly, his voice echoing through the grand hall. "If the girl has brought dangerous criminals to our doorstep, we must hand her over to the authorities immediately. For the sake of the company and Hannah's safety."

Lily looked up at Robert, her eyes widening in sudden horror. She raised a trembling finger, pointing directly at him.

"It's him," Lily gasped, her body shaking wildly. "That's the voice! That's the man who visited Arthur at the clinic last month!"
