Chapter 9 - The Truth Unveiled

The heavy mahogany door finally gave way with a deafening splintering sound.

The door was kicked open, and Arthur Collins stepped into the room. He was a tall, gaunt man in his late fifties with cold, sunken eyes and a cruel mouth. Behind him stood two armed mercenaries with drawn weapons.

"There you are, my dear niece," Arthur sneered, stepping over the shattered wooden frame. "You've caused me a great deal of trouble."

David lunged forward with the brass lamp, swinging with all his strength, but one of the mercenaries quickly blocked the blow with his rifle stock, striking David hard across the shoulder and forcing him to his knees.

"David!" I screamed, rushing to his side.

"Don't touch him!" Lily yelled, stepping directly between Arthur's men and us. She held her head high, staring her uncle down with unwavering courage. "You have what you came for, Arthur! The code is loaded into the terminal! Leave them alone!"

Arthur chuckled darkly, walking over to the telemedicine screen and looking at the green lines of code. "Ah, beautiful... Julian's life work. Worth hundreds of millions. And now, thanks to Robert's foolishness and Thomas's sentimentality, it's all mine."

He turned his weapon toward Lily. "It's a pity you couldn't just be a quiet, crazy little girl in Oregon, Lily. You look too much like your father. Every time I see you, I remember how he looked at me before I cut his brake lines."

Lily's eyes flared with intense grief and anger, but before Arthur could pull the trigger, a loud, mechanical hum echoed through the walls.

RED ALERT CANCELED. POLICE OVERRIDE ENGAGED.

Every single steel shutter across the mansion suddenly flew open, letting in the bright blinding glare of flashing red and blue police lights from outside.

High-powered police spotlights flooded through the room's large glass windows, blinding Arthur and his men.

"WHAT IS THAT?!" Arthur yelled, blocking his eyes.

"THIS IS THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION AND KING COUNTY SWAT!" a booming loudspeaker echoed from helicopters hovering directly above the estate. "DROP YOUR WEAPONS IMMEDIATELY! YOU ARE SURROUNDED!"

Through the shattered doorway of the hallway, Thomas appeared, bruised and bleeding from a cut on his forehead, but standing tall, holding a master control tablet in his hand. Behind him were half a dozen heavily armed SWAT officers with laser sights trained directly onto Arthur's chest.

"I told you, Arthur," Thomas said, his voice echoing with majestic authority. "You learned security from my textbooks. But I built this house."

Arthur panicked, raising his gun toward Thomas, but a SWAT sniper fired through the window, striking Arthur cleanly in the shoulder. Arthur screamed, dropping his weapon as police officers swarmed the room, tackling the mercenaries to the floor and pinning them down.

"SECURE THE BUILDING! MOVE! MOVE!" officers shouted.

Within minutes, the mercenaries were cuffed and dragged away. Robert was found handcuffed to the foyer railing downstairs, where Hannah herself had locked him using an emergency pair of security cuffs after realizing the full extent of his betrayal.

Thomas walked slowly into the room. He dropped his cane, stepped toward Lily, and fell to his knees in front of her, his voice choked with emotion.

"I'm sorry, Lily," Thomas wept softly. "I'm so sorry I couldn't protect your father back then. But I swore on Catherine's memory that I would keep you safe."

Lily looked down at the old man who had risked his empire, his reputation, and his life to save her. Tears streamed down her cheeks, but for the first time in years, they were tears of relief.

She knelt down and wrapped her arms around Thomas's neck.

"Thank you, Uncle Thomas," Lily whispered softly. "Thank you for bringing me home."
