Chapter 9 - The Thanksgiving of Grace

A year after the night she was thrown out, Claire hosted Thanksgiving.

The dining table in her new home was decorated with warm candles, fresh pine branches, and a beautiful, golden-roasted turkey. Sitting around the table were Julian, Eleanor, Mrs. Gable, and several of Claire’s close friends and colleagues.

Before the meal began, Lily stood up on her chair, holding a small cup of apple cider.

“I want to say grace!” Lily announced proudly.

Everyone at the table smiled, waiting expectantly.

Lily closed her eyes tightly. “Thank you for this yummy food, and for my puppy, and for my awesome mommy who always makes sure I have enough ketchup. And thank you for our beautiful house where everyone is nice to each other. Amen.”

“Amen,” the table echoed in unison.

Claire looked around at the faces of the people who truly loved and supported her. There were no hidden barbs here. No passive-aggressive comments, no cold glares, and no walking on eggshells.

She had built this sanctuary from the ashes of her old life.

As she carved the turkey, Claire looked out the window at the falling snow, feeling a deep, radiating warmth that no winter wind could ever chill.
