Chapter 7 - Rebuilding Aura

Three months later, the winter chill was beginning to give way to the first tentative whispers of spring.
Claire stood in the center of her new office on the top floor of a sleek, glass building in downtown Boston. The space was bright, filled with natural light and potted plants. On her large wooden desk sat a framed drawing Lily had made of a giant, multi-colored butterfly.
The transition had been intense, but incredibly rewarding. Under Julian’s guidance, Claire had hired a team of brilliant, young developers who actually respected her vision. They had rebuilt the database from the ground up, making it faster, more secure, and infinitely more scalable than the version Vanguard had used.
The clients who had fled Vanguard—including Harrison Global—had all signed on with Aura. They weren't stupid; they knew that the brain behind the software had always been Claire.
A knock on her door interrupted her thoughts. Julian walked in, carrying two cups of coffee.
“You look like you’re plotting world domination,” he joked, handing her a cup.
“Just admiring the view,” Claire smiled, taking a sip. “It’s still hard to believe. Sometimes I wake up expecting to be back in that broom closet, waiting for Mark to walk in and tell me I did something wrong.”
“You built this, Claire. Never forget that,” Julian said, his eyes filled with genuine pride. “By the way, I spoke to your mother yesterday. She and Arthur have officially separated. She bought a small townhouse in Cape Cod. She’s... actually doing really well. She’s volunteering at a local library.”
Claire felt a quiet sense of relief. “And Dad?”
“He’s living in a small apartment near the country club he can no longer afford to belong to,” Julian shrugged. “He’s bitter, of course. But he’s quiet. Mark had to take a mid-level sales job at a logistics firm. He’s learning what it’s like to work forty hours a week for someone else's benefit.”

“I don’t hate them,” Claire realized aloud. “I thought I would. I thought I’d want to gloat. But looking at all of this... I just feel peaceful.”
“That’s because you won, Claire,” Julian said gently. “The best revenge isn't destroying your enemies. It’s living so well that their opinions no longer have any power over you.”
