Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The weekend was a blur of legal maneuvers and frantic phone calls. As predicted, Harrison Global officially terminated their contract with Vanguard Solutions on Saturday afternoon. By Saturday night, the tech news outlets had picked up the story: Vanguard Solutions Faces Catastrophic Infrastructure Collapse Following Key Developer Dispute.
Claire sat on her couch, Lily curled up asleep next to her, watching the news ticker on her laptop.
Her mother, Eleanor, called her Sunday morning. For the first time in Claire’s life, Eleanor wasn't trying to manage appearances or guilt-trip her. She was simply crying.
“Claire... your father is talking about selling the house,” Eleanor sobbed. “The bank is calling. I don’t understand how this happened so fast. We were just having dinner.”
“No, Mom,” Claire said, her heart aching slightly, but her resolve remaining ironclad. “You were having dinner. Lily and I were being tolerated. There’s a difference.”
“I’m sorry,” Eleanor whispered. “I should have said something when Arthur spoke to you that way. I should have stopped Mark. I was just... I was always so afraid of your father’s temper. I thought if I kept the peace, everything would be okay.”
“Keeping the peace at the expense of your child’s self-worth isn't peace, Mom. It’s complicity,” Claire said. “I’m sorry you’re losing the house. But Julian’s offer is fair. It will cover Dad’s personal debts and leave you with enough to retire comfortably in a smaller place. If Dad is too proud to sign it, that’s on him.”
“He’s going to sign it,” Eleanor said, her voice suddenly sounding tired but strangely resolved. “I told him if he doesn't, I’m leaving him. I’ve spent thirty years watching him crush everyone around him, Claire. I won't let him drag me down into the dark with him.”
Claire closed her eyes, a tear finally slipping down her cheek. “Thank you, Mom. For saying that.”

On Monday morning, Julian’s legal team arrived at the Vanguard offices. Arthur Vance, looking defeated and aged by ten years, signed the paperwork. Vanguard Solutions was officially dissolved, its intellectual property and client list transferred to Aura Technologies—the new subsidiary funded by Aegis Capital.
And the Chief Technology Officer of Aura Technologies was Claire Vance.
