Chapter 8 - A New Horizon

By the time Lily’s sixth birthday rolled around in May, Claire had bought a beautiful, historic home in a quiet neighborhood just outside Boston. The house had a wrap-around porch, a big backyard with an ancient oak tree, and a room specifically designed for Lily’s art projects.
For her birthday party, Claire invited Lily’s friends from her new school, Mrs. Gable, and Julian.
The backyard was filled with the sound of children’s laughter and the smell of grilling burgers. Lily, wearing a bright yellow sundress with her favorite pink plastic barrettes, was running through the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy Claire had adopted for her a month earlier.
Claire stood on the back deck, watching her daughter. She felt a warm hand slip into hers.
She turned to see Eleanor standing beside her.
It had taken time, but Claire and her mother had begun to rebuild their relationship on new, healthier terms. Eleanor was no longer the timid woman who shrank under Arthur’s glare. She looked younger, her hair styled softly, wearing a simple linen dress.
“She looks so happy, Claire,” Eleanor said, her eyes shining as she watched Lily play.
“She is,” Claire said. “We both are.”
“I brought her a gift,” Eleanor said, reaching into her purse and pulling out a small, beautifully wrapped box. “I wanted to give it to her private-like. I didn't want to make a fuss.”
Claire helped Lily open it later that evening, after the other guests had left. Inside the box was a delicate, silver hairbrush with Lily’s name engraved on the back, alongside a pair of beautiful, hand-carved wooden butterfly barrettes.
“They were my grandmother’s,” Eleanor whispered to Lily. “I wanted you to have them. Because you are the most beautiful, brightest butterfly in our family.”

Lily beamed, hugging Eleanor tightly. “Thank you, Grandma! I love them!”
As Claire watched her mother hold her daughter, she felt the final, lingering shards of resentment from that terrible Thanksgiving dinner melt away.
