Chapter 6 - The Verdict and Closing Arguments
The judge leaned forward, resting her hands on the polished wood of the bench. Her eyes swept over the courtroom before locking onto Grant with unyielding intensity.
“Mr. Miller, you swore an oath to protect and cherish your wife and to provide a safe home for her child,” the judge began, her voice carrying an absolute, chilling weight. “Instead, you engineered a sinister plot, exploiting their trust to execute a premeditated murder for financial gain. Society cannot and will not tolerate such a gross violation of human life and trust.”
She paused, taking a breath before delivering the final judgment.
“For the charge of attempted murder in the first degree, coupled with insurance fraud and forgery, this court sentences you to twenty-five years to life in a maximum-security state correctional facility, with no possibility of parole for the first twenty years.”
The heavy gavel came down with a sharp, resounding crack that echoed through the room like a gunshot.
Grant flinched as if he had been physically struck. He dropped back down into his chair, burying his face in his hands as two bailiffs stepped forward, their hands resting firmly on his shoulders. Without another word, they clicked the handcuffs into place and led him out through the side door, removing him from our lives forever.
I let out a long, slow breath—a breath I felt like I had been holding since the night of the poisoned stew. Beside me, Detective Perez placed a warm hand on my shoulder and smiled.
“It’s over, Mrs. Miller,” she said softly. “You and Lily are safe.”

Stepping out of the courthouse doors into the warm Columbus afternoon sunlight, the air felt different. The sky was a brilliant, endless blue, unmarred by clouds. For the first time in months, the shadows of fear and deception were entirely gone, replaced by the warm promise of a peaceful tomorrow.
