Chapter 4 - The Arrest and the Interrogation

Two days later, the news broke across local television channels in Columbus. Headlines flashed across screens: Local Man Arrested for Attempted Murder of Wife Via Poisoned Stew.

Grant Miller was discharged from St. Joseph’s Hospital directly into police custody. Pale, gaunt, and dressed in a standard-issue county jail jumpsuit, he looked far smaller than the imposing figure who had stood at the head of our dining table just days before.

While Grant was booked at the Franklin County Department of Corrections, Detective Perez called me into the station to review the formal charges and discuss the upcoming legal proceedings.

“We have him dead to rights,” Perez told me across a metal interview table. “The forensic report on the packet found in his jacket matches the prescription sedative found in his blood and the residual traces in the bowl. Furthermore, his browser history shows multiple searches for slow-acting toxins and lethal doses over the past four months. It’s a textbook case of premeditated attempted murder.”

“Will he be able to make bail?” I asked, my voice steady, stripped of any lingering fear.

“Given the severity of the charges, the financial flight risk, and the clear threat to public safety, the judge denied bail completely,” Perez assured me. “He’s sitting in a maximum-security holding unit right now. He requested to speak with you, by the way. Said it was all a misunderstanding.”

I shook my head without hesitation. “I have nothing to say to him. My only concern is protecting Lily and moving forward.”

The legal process moved swiftly over the following weeks. Because of Lily's clear eyewitness account and the overwhelming physical evidence collected by the police, Grant’s defense attorney realized early on that a trial would be an unwinnable battle. They began pushing for a plea bargain to avoid a harsher maximum sentence.

Meanwhile, Lily and I began attending counseling sessions recommended by the police department's victim support services. At first, Lily jumped at every sudden noise and checked our food twice before taking a bite. But slowly, with patience, reassurance, and the comforting presence of our old routines, the color returned to her cheeks. She laughed again, her bright, clear voice echoing through the hallways of the home that was now safely, entirely ours.

Grant’s arraignment date approached quickly, setting the stage for a courtroom battle that would officially close this dark chapter of our lives and allow us to step out into the light.
