Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Policy

The hospital waiting room felt suddenly airless, the fluorescent lights buzzing with an aggressive, metallic hum. Detective Perez stood before us, her badge glinting under the glare, waiting for an answer that I was suddenly terrified to give.
“Life insurance?” I echoed, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. “What do you mean, increase it?”
Detective Perez flipped open a small leather notebook, her pen poised above a crisp white page. “According to our preliminary check with regional insurance providers, a policy was modified three weeks ago. The coverage amount was doubled to one million dollars. And the sole beneficiary wasn’t your daughter, Mrs. Miller. It was Grant Miller.”
Lily whimpered, clutching the hem of my cardigan so tightly her small knuckles turned white. I wrapped an arm around her, pulling her close against my side, feeling the frantic drumbeat of her heart.
“I didn't know anything about that,” I said, my voice dropping to a trembling whisper. “Grant handles his own finances, or so he claimed. He said my mother's house and my personal accounts were separate from our joint expenses, but... but he must have done this behind my back.”
“People rarely go to such lengths for a simple disagreement over a deed,” Detective Perez noted quietly, her sharp eyes studying every micro-expression on my face. “Poisoning someone takes planning. It takes purchasing a controlled substance, timing the dosage, and engineering a scenario where it looks like an accident or sudden natural illness. The fact that he slipped it into your food means he intended to incapacitate or kill you tonight.”
The full, terrifying weight of what had happened finally settled over me. If Lily hadn't wandered into the kitchen for a glass of water... if she hadn't seen the white powder tumbling into the dark broth... I would be the one lying in a hospital bed, or worse, in a morgue. Grant would have inherited my childhood home, collected a million-dollar payout, and walked away scot-free while Lily was left entirely alone in the world.
“Can we go home, Mom?” Lily whispered, her eyes brimming with tears. “I’m scared.”
“Not yet, sweetheart,” I murmured, kissing the top of her head. I looked back up at the detective. “What happens now?”
“Your husband is currently under police guard in the ICU,” Detective Perez said firmly. “Once he is medically cleared, he will be placed under formal arrest for attempted murder. We’ve already secured a warrant to search your residence. Forensics will be looking for more of that sedative, financial documents, computers, anything that shows premeditation.”

She gave us instructions on where to go next, offering to drive us home or to a safe place. I chose to go home, needing the familiar walls, even though the thought of returning to the dining room where Grant had smiled and served me poison made my stomach churn.
As the police cruiser dropped us off, I unlocked the front door and stepped into the quiet house. Everything looked exactly as we had left it. Two bowls of beef stew still sat untouched on the dining table, surrounded by the quiet shadows of the night.
