Chapter 9 - The Forest and the Stars

One year after that fateful Sunday, Daniel’s physical wounds had completely healed. Thanks to the trust fund my father had been forced to establish, we were able to move out of our cramped city apartment.

We bought a beautiful, cozy house near the mountains, surrounded by tall pine trees and a sprawling backyard that was entirely ours.

Daniel had his own art studio in the attic, with large windows that let in the golden afternoon light. He spent hours painting, his trauma slowly transforming into vibrant, beautiful landscapes of distant galaxies and peaceful forests.

He was no longer the frightened, quiet boy who hid behind my back. He had grown taller, his shoulders broader, and his laughter once again filled the rooms of our home.

One evening, we decided to camp out in the backyard. We pitched a tent under a canopy of brilliant, clear stars. We roasted marshmallows over a small fire pit, the crackle of the wood the only sound in the peaceful night.

"Mom?" Daniel asked, looking up at the Milky Way.

"Yes, sweetie?"

"Are we safe now?"

I pulled him close, wrapping my arm around his shoulders. I felt the steady, strong rise and fall of his chest. His ribs were fully healed, strong and unbroken.

"We are completely safe, Daniel," I said, kissing the top of his head. "No one is ever going to hurt you again. I promise."

"I know," he smiled, leaning against me. "You're the best spy partner ever."

"And you are the bravest astronaut in the universe."
