Chapter 7 - The Collapse of the Dynasty

The dining room was a battleground. My mother was weeping, clutching the documents showing her financial ruin, staring at Vanessa with a mixture of horror and betrayal.
"How could you?" my mother sobbed. "I gave you everything! I protected your son! I took the phone from Clara to protect your family!"
"Oh, shut up, Mom!" Vanessa snapped, her true colors finally showing. "You only cared about your own reputation! If you hadn't been so stupidly trusting, I wouldn't have had to take the money anyway! Dad’s business was failing because he’s an idiot!"
"What did you say?" my father bellowed, turning on Vanessa. "I built that business! You’ve been stealing from me? From your own father?"
"You didn't build anything, Dad! You just avoided taxes and hoped the IRS wouldn't notice!" Vanessa yelled back.
It was beautiful. They were tearing each other apart, exactly as I knew they would. The fragile illusion of their "perfect family" had shattered in a matter of minutes.
"Enough," I said. My voice wasn't loud, but it cut through their shouting like a knife.
They all stopped and looked at me. For the first time in my life, they looked at me with fear.
"Here is what is going to happen," I said, leaning over the table. "As we speak, an encrypted file containing all of this financial data has been sent to the IRS and the State Attorney General’s office. A whistle-blower report has been filed under my name. There is no stopping it. The investigation will begin tomorrow."
My father fell back into his chair, looking suddenly very old and very small. "Clara... please. I'll go to jail. I'll lose everything."
"You should have thought of that before you told me I 'make a big deal out of everything,'" I said. "But I am willing to offer a deal. A very specific, non-negotiable deal."
"What deal?" Vanessa hissed.
"First, Vanessa, you and your husband will sign a voluntary, permanent restraining order. You and Marcos will stay at least 500 feet away from Daniel, his school, and our home. If I see Marcos within a block of my son, I will immediately submit the physical assault reports to the juvenile court system, and I will personally ensure he spends his teenage years in a juvenile detention facility."
Vanessa gasped, looking at her husband, who was pale and silent. He knew they had no cards left to play.
"Second," I continued, looking at my father. "You will sign over 50% of your remaining personal liquid assets into a blind trust for Daniel’s college education and medical bills. My lawyer has already drafted the transfer paperwork. It’s in your folder. If you sign it tonight, I will instruct my lawyer to advocate for a plea deal regarding your tax evasion, citing your 'cooperation and restitution' to minimize your prison time."
My father looked at the paperwork. "And if I don't?"
May you like
"Then I will hand over the secondary drive, which contains evidence of your direct involvement in bribing local building inspectors. You will spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary."
My father’s hand shook as he reached for his pen.
